.: Despite Windy Weather, USC Defeats Washington

LOS ANGELES , January 5th, 2007

Meet Results

The USC swimming team fought off the rust of a holiday break and extremely windy conditions to defeat Pac-10 rival Washington at McDonald’s Swim Stadium. The women paired up for a first ever dual with USC defeating Washington 123-80. The men’s team also faired well, despite having its seniors take the day off, with a 119-86 victory.

Sophomore Rachael Waller won twice for the Lady Trojans, touching first in the 200y free in 1:52.41 and later winning the 100y free in 52.10.

Sophomore Kristen Lahey won the 50y free in 24.07, sophomore Katy Houston won the 200y IM in 2:06.98, junior Hayley McGregory won the 200y back in 2:03.29, junior Whitney Hentzen won the 500y free in 4:55.10 and sophomore Rebecca Soni won the 200y breast in 2:17.18.

Junior Brittany Allen took second in the 1000y free in 10:06.03, just off first-place Kim Jasmer of Washington (10:05.25).

Waller's win in the 200y free spearheaded a 1-2-3 finish with freshman Whitney Stephenson (1:54.41) and junior Emily Goetsch (1:55.28) following behind. Goetsch was later second in the 200y fly (2:05.77) while Stephenson was second in the 200y back (2:07.72).

Sophomore Missy McIntyre touched right behind Lahey in the 50y free in 24.18 while Soni posted a second in the 200y IM (2:08.76).

The relay quartet of Stephenson, Houston, junior Ali Hartwell and junior Kate Polich won the 400y medley to begin the meet in 3:48.71.

The Trojan men, who got a pair of firsts from sophomore Vanni Mangoni and a pair of relay wins, improved to 4-0. The Huskies fell to 0-1.

Mangoni won the 200y IM (1:55.09) and 200y back (1:52.63), touching just ahead of freshman teammate James Martin (1:52.88) in the latter.

On a day when times reflected the windy conditions - not too mention the holiday break - USC swept the 400y free and medley relays. Freshmen Shane Tusup and Tyler Schlenker, sophomore Ankur Poseria and freshman Kevin Graner teamed to win the 400y medley relay in 3:27.50. To wrap up the meet, juniors Richard Gosper and Tyler Wilson, Poseria and freshman Drew Harris won the 400y free relay in 3:10.19.

Wilson earlier won the 50y free in 21.56 while junior Brandon Lovell won the 200y fly in 1:52.65. Gosper, USC's fastest in the 50y free this season, won the 100y free in 46.27 while sophomore Kazu Miyahara won the 200y breast in 2:06.29. Freshmen Tyler Schlenker (2:07.76) and Lovell (2:07.82) finished in order behind Miyahara.
