BOCA RATON, Fla , January 3rd, 2007
Swimmers Jennifer Hill, Carlyann Miller and Erin Mattson all won individual events, back-to-back-to-back, to lead the Rice Owls to victory in two of three dual meets held simultaneously at the Florida Atlantic Invitational Wednesday in Boca Raton, Fla. Rice defeated Missouri State 134-51 and event host Florida Atlantic 100-85 in the tri-scored format, but the Blue & Gray fell to Atlantic Coast Conference power Clemson 99-70.
Hill raced to a victory in the 200-yard individual medley in her first event of the day. The standout from Knoxville, Tenn., posted a time of 2:09.57 to defeat a field of 17 competitors. Rice teammate Pam Zelnick was third in the event with a time of 2:11.35.
After Hill's win in the 200-IM Mattson took first place in the next event, 100-yard butterfly, with a time of 58.40. The freshman star from Highland, Ill., was first among 14 swimmers. She captured the victory after taking second in the 200-freestyle earlier in the meet with a time of 1:54.70.
Rice notched its third-straight win of the day when Miller claimed the 100-freestyle (52.28) in the next race. The Parliament was particularly strong in the 100-free as Miller took first while her Owl teammates Diane Gu and Andrea Hurn finished third and fourth, respectively. Miller was also third behind Mattson in the 200-free (1:54.83).
Other strong individual performances for Rice included junior distance specialist Caitlin Warner, a Florida native, taking second in the rugged 500-freestyle (5:04.97). Sophomore Keri Hyde finished third in the 100-backstroke with a season-best time of 1:00.53.
Miller, Mattson, Gu and Skylar Craig teamed to take second place in the 200-freestyle relay (1:36.94). Rice's 200-medley relay team was fourth (1:51.27).
The Rice swimmers are now 6-5 in dual meets. The team's next competition is at home against New Mexico State University on January 11. The non-conference dual meet starts at 5 pm at the Rice Pool.
