Madison, WI , January 20th, 2007
The University of Wisconsin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams recorded two victories Saturday afternoon in the conclusion of the annual Big Ten Tri Duals at the UW Natatorium.
The Wisconsin women’s team (7-1, 4-0 Big Ten) continued its weekend domination on Saturday as it won 5 of 8 swimming events, setting four pool records in the process. Using record-setting performances by sophomore Yi Ting Siow and senior Susan Johnson, the Badgers defeated Purdue (2-4, 1-3) 221-132 and Minnesota (3-5, 2-1) 220-131 to improve to 40-0 at home since January of 1998.
On the men’s side, the Badgers (4-4, 1-3) fell to Purdue (6-6, 3-4) 208.5-144.5 and to Minnesota (5-0, 3-0) 243-110.
Siow added to her record-setting weekend as she set pool records in the 400-yard IM and the 200-yard breaststroke. The two records came in addition to her record set Friday night in the 200-yard IM. In the 200-yard breaststroke, Siow posted an NCAA “A” time of 2:12.80, bettering her old mark of 2:14.51 set in 2005. In the 400-yard IM, Siow finished with an NCAA “B” time of 4:16.91, breaking the old record of 4:17.91 set in 2004 by former Badger Bethany Pendleton.
Johnson’s pool record came in the 200-yard backstroke as she recorded an NCAA “B” time of 1:58.77, breaking her own record of 2:00.55 set in 2004. The other pool record set by the women’s team on Saturday came in the 200-yard freestyle relay as Hannah McClurg, Jackie Vavrek, Rosie Morahan and Christine Zwiegers’ mark of 1:34.09 beat the 2004 record of 1:34.12.
The women’s team other victory came in the last event of the day as it won the 400-yard freestyle relay. This time, Morahan, Vavrek, Jen Illescas and Johnson teamed up to win the event in 3:25.25.
While the Wisconsin men’s team failed to capture any first-place finishes, it did manage to secure four second-place marks and three third-place finishes. Sophomore Scott Rice had one of each as he finished second in the 100-yard butterfly (49.68) and third in the 400-yard IM (4:01.02).
In addition, senior Tom Molzahn finished second in the 500-yard freestyle (4:34.41) while the team’s other second-place finishes came from their relay teams. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Kyle Sorensen, Mike Desautels, Molzahn and Phil Davies finished with a time of 1:23.39, while in the 400-yard freestyle relay the same four finished with a time of 3:02.63.
