Oakland’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams hosted the Michigan State Spartans at Lepley Pool this evening, splitting the dual meet. The Golden Grizzly men beat MSU 164-136 while the women fell to the Spartans 170-128. Sophomore Aaron Holdsworth led the men with four victories, while junior Zoltan Horvath and freshman Marcin Unold posted three wins each. Junior Rachel Beardsley and senior Amanda Burwell each registered three victories to lead the women.
The Oakland women opened the meet with a 1-2 sweep in the 200-yard medley relay. Freshman Sarah Ludema, Burwell, Beardsley and senior Elaine Shalla combined for a time of 1:47.84, the fastest by OU this season. Sophomore Tara Baxter, senior Kim Bacon, freshman Kristen Hamilton and junior Riley Rigoli comprised the second place relay, which clocked in at 1:48.45.
Sophomore Sophia Gustafsson won the first of two events on the day in the 1000 free, finishing the race in 10:24.64. Freshman Rachel Girard followed in third place with a 10:28.70 and junior Carolyn Routh was right behind in fourth place with a time of 10:39.08.
Burwell led a 1-2 finish in the 100 breaststroke with the fastest time of her career at 1:06.75. Bacon hit the wall at 1:06.98, her fastest time this year. Gustafsson placed second in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:09.58, just 0.15 seconds off the winning pace.
Beardsley captured the 50 free in 24.23, her fastest time of the year and just one tenth of a second off her personal best. Rigoli followed in third place with a 24.65 while junior Chrissy Hager clocked in at 25.11. After the break Rigoli finished second in the 100 free, posting a 53.45.
Gustafsson picked up her second win of the day in the 500 free, finishing the race in 5:06.88. Burwell won the 200 IM by just five one hundredths of a second as her 2:10.20 topped Michigan State’s Emma Schaeffer.
The Golden Grizzlies closed the meet with a win in the 400 free relay as Shalla, Rigoli, Beardsley and Ludema combined for a time of 3:32.80, the second fastest time by Oakland this season and more than a second ahead of MSU’s top entry.
Diver Missy Butcher compiled a personal best score of 204.82 on the 1-meter board. She also scored 156.22 on the 3-meter board and placed fifth in each event.
Like the women, the OU men opened the meet with a 1-2 sweep in the 200 medley relay. Unold, Horvath, Holdsworth sophomore Andy Kellogg shaved 0.31 seconds off the fastest time of the season with a 1:32.57 en route to the victory. Oakland’s second entry of sophomore Mike Templeton, freshman Eddie Toro, junior Chris Tansel and junior Nick Bonucchi combined for a second place finish at 1:33.95, the third fastest time of the year in the event.
Sophomore Anthony Serio dropped a whopping nine seconds off his best time ever and 19 seconds off his best time this year when he recorded a 9:41.25 in the 1000 free. Serio finished second while Templeton was in fourth with a time of 9:53.67and sophomore Garrett Baringhaus clocked in at 10:08.61 for sixth.
Unold and Templeton combined for a 1-2 finish in the 100 back, as Unold swam a personal best 50.48 and Templeton followed in 52.20. Oakland registered its second 1-2 finish in as many events in the 100 breaststroke, as Horvath won in 56.56 and Toro swam his best time with a 58.93.
Holdsworth captured his first individual event of the evening with a time of 1:52.74 in the 200 butterfly, nearly four seconds ahead of the rest of the field. Bonucchi and Kellogg were 2-3 in the 50 free, with Bonucchi swimming a personal best 21.27 and Kellogg right on his heels at 21.33. After the break Bonucchi and sophomore Luke Ortego each posted season best times in the 100 free, as Bonucchi’s 47.29 edged Ortego’s 47.30 by one tenth of a second.
Templeton led a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 back, winning with a 1:51.66. Unold followed in second place with a personal best time of 1:52.42 while freshman Patrick Downing was third at 1:54.51.
Horvath led a 1-2 finish in the 200 breaststroke, hitting the wall in first with a 2:06.70. Toro was second with a personal best time of 2:09.90. Sophomore Steven Catala and freshman Anthony Sall also recorded season best times, with Catala clocking in at 2:13.09 and Sall at 2:22.46.
Holdsworth picked up his third win of the day, in the 100 butterfly leading OU to a 1-2 finish. His time of 50.59 edged out teammate Tansel’s 50.74. Sophomore Ben MacColl posted a personal best time of 55.81 in the event.
Horvath and Toro placed second and third respectively in the 200 IM, as Horvath swam a 1:54.00 and Toro clocked a personal best of 1:55.89. Oakland closed the meet with its fastest time of the year in the 400 free relay as Unold, Kellogg, Holdsworth and Bonucchi won the race in 3:04.87.
Junior Ryan Kish won both the 1-meter and the 3-meter diving, compiling scores of 301.38 and 341.10 respectively. Freshman Adam Ralph placed fourth in each event, scoring 258.57 on the 1-meter board and 259.80 on the 3-meter. Senior John Van Portfleet was sixth on the 1-meter board with a score of 225.82 and fifth on the 3-meter with a 254.02. Freshman Mike Ledesma was seventh in each event, posting 186.07 in the 1-meter and scoring a personal best 239.32 in the 3-meter.
