With wins in nearly every event, the Missouri State swimming and diving teams recorded a sweep over the Evansville Purple Aces Friday in Evansville, Ind.
Freshman Matana Wellman was a multi-event winner as she anchored the Bears' 200 freestyle relay to victory in a time of 1:42.04, won the 100 freestyle in 55.00 and clocked a winning time of 25.35 in the 50 freestyle.
The MSU women's team swam to a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay to begin the meet. Allison Zeller, Stacey MacDonald, Andi Rojas and Jordan Hawkins relayed to a time of 1:50.85. Rojas and Hawkins were also individual winners with Rojas claiming first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.70 and Hawkins winning the 100 backstroke in a time of 58.99.
Other event winners for the Missouri State women included Jessica Bennett in the 200 freestyle (2:01.83), Fran Moody in the 200 IM (2:14.71), Breanna Hollar in the 100 butterfly (59.67), Francy Palma in the 500 freestyle (5:22.03), and Chelsea Ray on the three-meter diving board (195.95 points).
On the men's side, Victor Serra claimed gold in two individual events and one relay. He swam the third-leg of the 200 medley relay that finished in a winning time of 1:35.10 and won the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle in times of 21.67 and 47.89, respectively.
Ignacio Gayo, Seth Johnson and Andrew Denefe also swam in the first-place 200 medley relay with Gayo and Johnson each adding individual wins as well. Gayo clocked a time of 53.24 in the 100 backstroke to claim gold and Johnson won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 58.43.
Bryan Muench was a winner for the Bears in the 200 freestyle, touching the wall at 1:47.27. Eduardo Pajares took home gold in the 200 IM in a time of 1:57.15 and A.J. Goertzen paced himself to victory in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:48.13. Senior Ryan Maeker swept the diving events for Missouri State, recording 251.75 points on the one-meter board and 241.60 on the three-meter board.
The Bears wrap up their regular season Saturday, Jan. 20, in Carbondale, Ill., as they challenge the Southern Illinois Salukis in dual competition at 1 p.m.
