.: San Diego Women, North Dakota Men Stay Atop Division II Rankings

Somers, WI , January 2nd, 2007

Through the mid-point of the collegiate swimming season, a pair of Division II heavyweights remain atop the CollegeSwimming.com Division II Dual Meet Rankings.  The University of California-San Diego women and University of North Dakota men occupy the top spots.  For UCSD, it is a familiar spot.  The Triton’s men’s and women’s teams were the Division II Dual-Meet National Champions.  The Fighting Sioux men finished second The CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major Rankings uses and objective scoring system to measure a team’s dual-meet strength.

The North Dakota men completed the fall season with a second-place finish at the Eastern Michigan Invitational.  The meet wrapped up a fall that saw the Fighting Sioux qualify ten individuals to the March 2007 NCAA Championships.  Despite opposite records, West Chester (3-1) and UC-San Diego (1-3) are tied for second.  Both teams’ losses have come at the hands of Division I opponents.  Wayne State (2-2) finished third behind top-ranked North Dakota at the EMU Invitational while Grand Valley State (4-1) fell from second to fifth.  Ouachita Baptist, Henderson State, Delta State, Saint Cloud State and Ashland complete the top ten.

On the women’s side, UC-San Diego (1-3) retains its top spot though saw North Dakota whittle their lead to one point.  The Triton women boast dozen NCAA Qualifiers as they head into the new year.  The North Dakota (0-0) and Wayne State (3-1), who finished third and fourth respectively at the EMU Invitational, occupy the next two spots in the rankings.   South Dakota (2-1) and Delta State each dropped a spot to round out the top five.  Completing the top ten are West Chester, Grand Valley State, Saint Cloud and Truman State.

The CollegeSwimming.com rankings are based on each team's best dual meet lineup as judged and submitted by participating teams. Rankings are announced four times throughout the season and entries are due on November 14 (Pre-Invite), December 20 (Post-Invite), February 6 (Pre-Conference) , and March 6 (post-conference).
