Meet Results

For the second year in a row, the Division III Tufts University men's swimming & diving team defeated Division I Boston College in a dual meet, 205-143, on Wednesday night. The Jumbos were led by freshman sensation Lawrence Chan (Fresh Meadows, NY), who won three events. Tufts also got two wins apiece from senior co-captain Greg Bettencourt (West Granby, CT), senior Justin Fanning (Concord, MA)Nate Cronin (Foxborough, MA).

Chan won the 100 breaststroke in 1 minute, 0.46 seconds, the 50 breast in 27.48 seconds and the 200 individual medley in a 2:03.02 time. He also swam the second leg in the 200 medley relay that opened the meet by winning by less than a half-second with a 1:37.32 touch. Joining him were Fanning in the lead leg, Bettencourt and senior Mike Kinsella (Hinsdale, IL) as the anchor.

That foursome gave the Jumbos a big lead with wins in the first half of the meet. Bettencourt led a 1-2-3 Jumbo finish in the 200 freestyle with a 1:44.90 time. Behind him were freshman Gene Kurtysh (Pittsburgh, PA) in 1:49.91 and freshman Patrick Kinsella (Hinsdale, IL) in 1:50.63. Fanning followed with a 55.8 seconds time to win the 100 backstroke, then Cronin swam 2:02.59 to win the 200 butterfly. Kinsella would win the 50 freestyle in 22.16 seconds two events later.

Tufts later sealed the victory with a win by senior co-captain Ray Radovich (Branford, CT), who took the 200 backstroke with a 2:01.76 finish, and the second wins of the meet by Fanning (25.60 in the 50 back), Cronin (2:16.70 in the 200 breast) and Bettencourt (4:48.18 in the 500 free). Mike Kinsella and Bettencourt would join sophomores Andrew Shields (Norwalk, CT) and Matt Murphy (Chelmsford, MA) to cap the meet with a victory time of 1:27.83 in the 200 freestyle relay.

Boston College's effort was led by senior Thomas Martz, who won the 50 butterfly in 24.09 seconds and the 100 butterfly in 54.69 seconds. Classmate Chris Wilson-Byrne also swept the diving events with scores of 271.13 points in one-meter and 251.33 points in three-meter.

The win lifts the Jumbos to 7-1 overall. They compete next at MIT on Saturday. The defeat was just the second in a dual meet of the season for the Eagles, who dropped to 5-2.
