.: Sophs and Seniors Highlight Weekly Swimmer Nods

National Collegiate Swimmer-of-the-Week (NCSW) honors were dominated by sophomore and senior swimmers. Jessica Hardy (University of California) and Matt Grevers (Northwestern University) claimed NCSW honors for Division I. Susan Bell (University of California San Diego) and Guilherme Veiga (Wayne State University) grabbed Division II NCSW honors this week. While Jessica Connors (Kenyon College) and Stephen Schranck (Carthage College) took Division III NCSW honors. The six were selected based on their performances January 8, 2007-January 14, 2007 by a panel of collegiate coaches and nominated by coaches, sports information directors, conference representatives and CollegeSwimming.com staffers.
 


Division I

Jessica Hardy, California-Berkeley 
So., Long Beach, CA
Fourth-ranked California captured eight of 16 events in a 159-142 dual-meet win over second-ranked Arizona on a chilly Saturday afternoon at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center. The Golden Bears kept their dual-meet record perfect, at 8-0, while the Wildcats fell to 5-2. The Cal A squad, with the help of Hardy, took the 400 medley relay in an NCAA Championships provisional “B” qualifying time (3:39.78).  After Cal dropped the 100 freestyle and 200 backstroke to Arizona, Hardy rebounded to win the 100 breaststroke (1:01.43), in an automatic NCAA Championships qualifying time. Hardy was also second in the 200 Individual Medley (2:03.09) with an NCAA “B” cut time. 

Matt Grevers, Northwestern
Sr., Lake Forest, Il
Northwestern dominated the field at the Dallas Morning News Swimming & Diving Classic, breaking 10 meet and pool records to score 359 points and defeat No. 3 California (334), host Southern Methodist University (305) and No. 10 Florida State (131). Every event Matt Grevers swam set meet and pool records. His best performance was a meet, pool and Northwestern school record with an 'A' time to win the 200 freestyle (1:34.21). He set a meet and pool record with an NCAA 'A' time to win the 100 backstroke (46.86), and earned another meet and pool record with an NCAA 'A' time to win the 200 backstroke (1:41.55). Grevers also swam on three meet- and pool-record setting relays: He helped the 'Cats to a winning 'A' time in the 200 freestyle relay (1:19.74, lead-off split: 19.82). He also swam the leadoff leg in the 200 medley relay, with his 22.25 helping NU to a meet and pool record NCAA 'B' time of 1:26.97.

Division II

Susan Bell, UC-San Diego
Sr., La Jolla, CA
The UC San Diego women’s swimming team won 11-of-14 events against Loyola Marymount, defeating the Lions 163-99 on Saturday afternoon at Canyonview Pool. The Tritons finished 1-2-3 in both the 200 back and 400 IM, with Susan Bell winning both events. In the 200 back, UCSD swept as Bell (2:08.27), led the Triton sweep with a NCAA “B” qualifying time. Bell was victorious again in the 400 Individual Medley (4:32.24), this time turning in an NCAA automatic qualifying time.

Guilherme Veiga, Wayne State University

In its first competition of 2007, the Wayne State men's swimming and diving squad defeated Grand Valley State, 156-89, on Friday evening. Guilherme Veiga was victorious in the 200 freestyle (1:46.56), along with the 500 freestyle (4:42.97). He came back the next day as the Wayne State men's swimming and diving team earned its second dual meet victory of the weekend, defeating Calvin College, 143-90, in Grand Rapids on Saturday afternoon.  Veiga took the 1650 freestyle (16:16.61) achieving an NCAA “B” cut time in the process. He was also runner-up in the 400 Individual Medley (4:21.26) wrapping up a busy weekend.

Division III

Jessica Connors, Kenyon College
Sr., Dearborn, MI
In its first home meet since hosting the Nike Cup over a month ago, the Kenyon College women's swim team rode the stellar results of senior Jessica Connors and defeated the Oakland University Grizzlies, 145-143, Saturday at the Kenyon Athletic Center. Connors got the meet started by swimming a leg on the winning 200 medley relay team (1:49.57), just .18 of a second in front of Oakland's second-place squad. The Grizzlies then rattled off three straight event wins before Connors ended the streak by winning the 100 breaststroke in an NCAA “B” qualifying time (1:07.22). Later in the meet, Connors tacked on two more wins in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.53), which is a strong NCAA “B” qualifying cut, and the 200 individual medley (2:12.28).

Stephen Schranck, Carthage College
So., Alton, IL
The Carthage College men’s swimming team lost to NCAA Division I Northwestern University, 118-77, on Saturday, January 13 at the Koenitzer Aquatic Center in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Carthage’s Stephen Schranck won the 200 breaststroke (2:07.94) turning in the only NCAA cut for the Red Men on Saturday. His meet started by taking third place, and being Carthage’s top finisher, in the 200 Individual Medley (1:58.36). He later took fourth in the 100 freestyle (49.25). Schranck’s 200 breaststroke performance was his final of the meet.
