The South Dakota Women's Swimming and Diving Team (3-1) won 10 events and edged Nebraska-Omaha, 150-149, in a North Central Conference dual meet at the HPER Pool on the UNO campus in Omaha, Neb., on Friday night.
The Coyotes avenged an earlier dual meet loss (124-119) to UNO as Leita Rolfe and Jill Smolczyk each pick up two individual wins. South Dakota, ranked fourth in the nation by Collegeswimming.com, improved its record to 3-1 in dual meets this season.
"This is a big win for us," said second-year head swimming coach Jason Mahowald. "I believe this may be our first-ever dual win against UNO in Omaha. Our team is really pleased with their efforts tonight," he said.
Smolczyk, who with USD's Emilie Kluth, finished 1-2 on both the 1M and 3M boards. Smolczyk, a junior from Omaha, Neb., had 394.85 points in the 1M competition while Kluth of Columbus, Neb., was second with 366.60 points. On the 3M board, Smolczyk won a second title with 461.60 points with Kluth totaling 451.65 points. Smolczyk and Kluth both met the NCAA Division II qualifying standards on both boards (Smolczyk qualified for nationals on both boards earlier this season).
Rolfe, a junior from Newcastle, Wyo., captured the 200 IM with a season-best clocking of 2:11.88 and she also won the 200 breaststroke in 2:31.05.
