.: Miami Women, Navy Men Lead Mid-Major Ranking

Somers, WI , February 5th, 2007

After completing its first undefeated season in thirty years, the Miami (OH) women's swimming team moved to the top of the CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major Dual Meet Rankings.  The move marked the third team to lead the rankings this season after second-ranked Navy, and third-ranked Harvard each took their turns at the top.  The Midshipmen of Navy continued their supremacy, retaining the top spot that they've held all season.  The Mid-Major Rankings reflect each teams' relative strength in dual meets as measured by top times prior to 2007 Conference Championships.

On the women's side, Miami completed a 12-0 dual meet season and extended their Mid-American Conference dual-meet winning streak to forty-six meets.  The wins propelled the Redhawks past the Naval Academy.  Miami won the 2003-04 CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major Dual Meet National Title.  Harvard slipped a spot to third while Penn made its first appearance in the top five, dropping Florida Atlantic one notch.  UNC Wilmington made the biggest jump of the poll, cracking the the top ten after being ranked 17th previously.  Western Kentucky (12th) and UW-Milwaukee (11th) both dropped from the top ten.

On the men's side, Navy retained its top spot despite being handed a loss by number-two Cornell.  The rankings reflect differences in the teams' best times this season as entered and verified.  Cornell, which completed its first dual-meet season since 1946, moved past Princeton (which it defeated 160-140) into second.  Princeton retained a scant 1/2 point lead over Eastern Michigan for third.  Denver leapt into the top five after a 12th place ranking in the December 20th rankings.  Oakland dropped from the top five while Massachusetts fell from the top ten.  New to the rankings were Wright State (15th), and Pennsylvania (13th).

The mid-major rankings compare institutions that do not benefit from large football and basketball television agreements (BCS conferences plus Mountain West and Western Athletic Conference). Rankings are based on each team's best dual meet lineup as judged and submitted by participating teams. Rankings are announced four times throughout the season and entries are due on November 14 (Pre-Invite), December 20 (Post-Invite), February 6 (Pre-Conference) , and March 6 (post-conference).
