A victory by the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay women's swimming and diving team in the final event of the meet, the 400 freestyle relay, helped the Phoenix slip past in-state rival UW-Milwaukee for a 122-121 win Saturday afternoon at Dorschel Natatorium. The Phoenix men's team also earned a victory over the Panthers by a score of 132-111.
The duel meet was the final event of the regular season for UW-Green Bay. The women's team wrapping up its season with 13 straight wins and a 13-1 overall mark including a 6-0 record against Horizon League foes, while the men's team won its last nine duels to finish 9-3 and 3-2.
UW-Milwaukee entered the meet ranked No.8 in the CollegeSwimming.com women's mid-major poll while the men's squad was ranked 13th.
The Phoenix women trailed the Panthers 117-109 in the back-and-forth battle going in to the final event of the day needing a first-place finish to earn the win. UW-Green Bay got just that as the team of Kristin Carlson, Allison Thut, Kelsey Hausken and Laurel Yelton finished in a time of 3:34.54 to top UW-Milwaukee's top team by a second and a half.
The Phoenix was led by a pair of individual wins by Danielle DeGrand. The sophomore took home titles in the 200 individual medley (2:10.09) and the 200 backstroke (2:07.60). UW-Green Bay also got first-place finishes from Hausken in the 50 free (24.64), Carlson in the 500 free (5:08.66) and Molly Cox in the 1000 free (10:36.33).
On the men's side, the Phoenix claimed wins in eight of the 13 events. Joey Weber, Alex Hill and Phillip Zumstein paced UW-Green Bay with two victories apiece. Swimming in the final home meet of his career, Weber touched first in the 50 free (21.16) and the 200 back (1:53.86) and was also a member of the winning 400 medley relay team (3:55.21).
Hill swept the distance freestyle events, winning the 500 free (4:40.28) and out-touching Milwaukee's Robby Leibold to take the 1000 free (9:40.51). Zumstein won on both diving boards, posting top scores of 285.85 on the 1-meter and 340.98 on the 3-meter. Dan Lindstrom also chipped in with a victory in the 200 breaststroke (2:11.23).
UW-Green Bay will now rest until competing in the Horizon League Championships Feb. 21-24.
