Junior Lindsay Hart broke her own school record in the 200-yard backstroke to lead a strong second day for the Harvard women’s swimming and diving team, which defeated Yale, 172-147, but could not catch Princeton, 174-145, Saturday at DeNunzio Pool.
Bridget O’Connor and Alexandra Clarke also won events for the Crimson, which finishes its dual meet season 7-2, 6-1 against Ivy League competition. Princeton handed Harvard its first Ivy dual-meet loss since the 2004 HYP meet.
Harvard now looks to replicate the Tigers’ feat from last season, when Princeton fell to Harvard at HYP, but won the team title at the Ivy League Championships. The meet will be held back at Princeton Feb. 15-17.
“We had some fantastic swims for this time of the season,” said Harvard head coach Stephanie Morawski. “We’re very pleased with our performance, and we’re going to come back in 12 days and swim even faster.”
Hart, going head-to-head with defending Ivy champion Moira McCloskey of Yale, finished first in the 200 back in 1:59.59, bettering the mark of 1:59.84 she set at Ivies last season. The time was good for an NCAA “B” cut. She later added a third-place finish in the 200 individual medley in 2:05.43.
Clarke, who set a new record in the 1,000 freestyle Friday night, took the 500 in 4:51.15, also good for a “B” cut. Senior Laurin Weisenthal finished second in 4:55.40.
O’Connor’s win came in the next event, the 100-yard butterfly in 55.89 seconds.
Friday’s Crimson event-winners both placed in the top three Saturday. Samantha Papadakis placed second in the three-meter diving with a score of 298.50, and fellow junior Jaclyn Pangilinan took third in the 100 breaststroke in 2:18.12.
