No. 16 C.W. Post swimming team defeated No. 20 University of Bridgeport, 144.5-112.5, during Saturday afternoon’s meet at the Pratt Recreation Center.
C.W. Post set five team records as well as pool records and received an NCAA qualifying “A” cut in the 200-yard medley relay with a finishing time of one minute, 47.25 seconds, which was powered by junior Mariel Andersson (Brastad, Sweden), sophomore Jennifer Esposito (Lindenhurst, N.Y.), junior Katie Kelly (Sayville, N.Y.) and junior Ivana Klaric (Split, Croatia).
Kelly won three individual events and set both pool and team records in all three. She took the top placing in the 1000 free when she slapped the wall at 10:25.23, breaking a pool record set in 1998 by NYU’s Kacy McCaffrey. She won the 100 breast (1:05.95) and finished with a first-place finish in the 200 breast (2:22.09).
Esposito also had some individual wins of her own. In the 200 fly, she set both a pool and school record when she paced herself to a first-place finish with a final time of 2:01.20. Freshman Sofi Mathsson (Stockholm, Sweden) was second at 2:12.05, followed by Klaric at 2:12.65. Esposito also won the 100 fly when she tapped the wall at 56.21.
In the 100 free, Andersson and Bridgeport’s Roxana Purcelea both finished first at 53.66, which also set a new pool record.
The Pioneers finished the meet with a new pool record in the 200 freestyle relay (1:38.61).
