.: Franklin & Marshall College Splits With Washington College
CHESTERTOWN, MD , December 8th, 2007
Visiting Franklin & Marshall College topped host Washington College, 144-61, in Centennial Conference men's swimming action on Saturday afternoon at the Casey Swim Center. With the victory the Diplomats improve to 3-4 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial. Sopohmore Chris Soper (Towson, MD/Loyola Blakefield) led Washington (3-3, 0-2
Centennial) with a victory in the 50 freestyle.
Soper won the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.66 seconds and placed second in the 100 freestyle with a mark of 49.65. His victory in the 50 freestyle was the Shoremen's lone victory of the afternoon.
Washington had three swimmers place second in two events. Freshman Matt Violette (Westbrook, ME/Westbrook) finished second in 200 backstroke with a WC season-best time of 2:03.39 and is now the sixth fastest Shoremen
swimmer of all-time in the event. He also finished second in the 200
freesyle with a mark of 1:51.27. Senior Alex Thomas (Towson, MD/Calvert
Hall) finished second in the 200 individual medley (2:06.68) and the 200
breastroke (2:18.53). Junior Dan Wentzel (Exton, PA/Henderson) was second
in the 1000 freestyle (10:38.97) and the 500 freestyle (5:13.17).
Sophomore Dylan Pollock (Savannah, GA/Benedictine Military) was the top WC
swimmer in the 200 butterfly, placing third with a time of 2:08.12.
In the relay events, Washington's "A" relay was just edged by Franklin &
Marshall's "A" relay by 1.02 seconds in the 400 medley relay as the
Diplomats won with a time of 3:40.96. The Shoremen's "A" relay team was
second in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:34.45.
The Shoremen return to action on January 5 at the Orange Bowl Swim Classic
down in Key Largo, FL.
Senior Megan Morse (Easton, MD/Sts. Peter and Paul) set
the Washington College record in the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.66
seconds in the leadoff leg of the 400 freestyle relay as the Shorewomen
downed visiting Franklin & Marshall, 128-77, in Centennial Conference
women's swimming action on Saturday afternoon at the Casey Swim Center. It
is the first victory for Washington (6-1, 2-1 CC) over the Diplomats since
a 137-73 triumph on November 17, 2001.
Morse also won two individual events on the afternoon. She won the 200
individual medley with a time of 2:14.01, which is third-fastest ever by a
WC swimmer and a season-best time by a Shorewomen swimmer. She also
captured the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:16.57.
Freshman Rachel Glasser (Silver Spring, MD/Silverbrook) captured three
events in the victory. She won the 1000 freestyle (10:58.77), the 200
freestyle (2:00.76) and the 200 butterfly (2:13.09).
Sophomore Kathy Gerhart (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville Area) won two
events against the Diplomats. She won the 50 freestyle with a time of
25.46 seconds and the 100 freestyle with a mark of 56.03 seconds.
Senior Nicole Ludwig (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan) captured the 200 breaststroke
with a time of 2:35.55.
The Shorewomen won eight of nine individual events and won both relays
versus Franklin & Marshall (3-5, 1-2 CC). The lone victory for the
Diplomats was in the 200 backstroke.
The Shorewomen return to action on January 5 at the Orange Bowl Swim
Classic down in Key Largo, FL.
