"Our heart goes out to the Moxie family," Clemson Swimming and Diving Coach Christopher Ip told the Associated Press. "Amy was so eager to come to Clemson and was looking forward to the start of practice. That is what she was doing today, jogging on her own in preparation for the beginning of practice. "She grew up wanting to be a Clemson Tiger and she was passionate about being a part of our program.
Moxie was the South Carolina State Champion in the 500 free in 2005 at Mauldin High School. She was also a member of ranked in the top 10 in the state of South Carolina in the 400 free, the 800 free, the 1500 free, 200 back and 400 IM in 2007. Her Greenville Club team won the 2006 Spring State Championship. Moxie was state runner-up in the 200 free and 500 free in 2006 and was the South Carolina State Champion in the 500 free while a student at Mauldin High School in 2005
Dean of Student Joy Smith said, "We are deeply saddened by this sudden loss of a new member of the Clemson family, who already had significant ties to Clemson and many friends on campus and in the Upstate community,"
Moxie planned to study business and had a sister who is pursuing Nursing at the South Carolina school. The school will make a formal announcement regarding funeral arrangements and a campus memorial at a later date."
"Everyone in our swimming program is saddened by her loss and we will give the Moxie family our total support in this difficult time," said Ip.
