.: Colorado Defends Collegiate Club Championships

Charlottesville, VA , April 15th, 2007

Meet Results

Home pool advantage wasn't enough for the host University of Virginia club team to overcome the University of Colorado at the 3rd annual American Swimming Association Collegiate Club Championships.

The ASA-University division is an association of student-run swim clubs from colleges and universities. The majority of institutions also maintain varsity programs. Teams vary widely from loosely-organized club teams to programs like Colorado. The longstanding team receives some funding from the University of Colorado, has its own coach and a schedule that includes a winter training trip and comptition against Division I, II, and III varsity programs.

Swimmers at ASA U. Nationals have often enjoyed taking advantage of the American Swimming Association's progressive rule-book that allows for non-traditional events such as the 25's and features stroke rules that allow starting from the blocks on backstroke, flip-turns in all strokes, and let teams strategically select their own stroke order on medley relays. For this year's Nationals, the host (Virginia Club Swimming) took advantage of a clause in the ASA Rulebook that allows for meet hosts to request additional rule restrictions to be in effect at their meets. The restrictions that were approved as part of the meet sanction required in-the-water backstroke starts, two hand touches to complete any length of breast or fly, and traditional medley relay order.

The first ASA-U Championships were held in 2005 at the University of Houston and were won by the Houston men and Central Washington women. Last year's championships, held at The Ohio State University saw Colorado and Virginia going 1-2 in both men's and women's competitions.
