.: A Bulldog in Gator Country? Shealy Named at North Florida

Jacksonville, FL , September 6th, 2006

It might be hard to imagine one of Georgia's most decorated swimmers taking position just an hour down the road from Gainesville, but Courtney Shealy's been doing the unimaginable since doing double-duty as a member of the Bulldog's volleyball and swimming programs. Now the two-time Olympic gold medalist will bring her talents to Jacksonville as an assistant coach for North Florida.

Shealy took home gold medals in both the 400- freestyle and 400-individual medley relays for the United States at the 2000 Olympic Games, held in Sydney, Australia, helping her team set world a record in the 400-freestyle.

Shealy's resume includes spots on the Pan-American (1999), Pan Pacific (2002) and United States World Cup teams (2000-2004).

"I am looking forward to adding Courtney Shealy, a very accomplished and experienced athlete, to our staff," UNF head coach Beth Harrell said. "I have known Courtney for 12 years and I have watched her grow into a great person as well as a great student- athlete. I will thoroughly enjoy teaching her and helping her gain experience as a Division I swimming coach."

Along with her world-wide competitions, Shealy was the 2000 NCAA and SEC Swimmer of the Year at the University of Georgia. She was also the swimmer of the meet at the 2000 NCAA Championships. Her NCAA accomplishments include 26 first team All- America selections, two second team All-America selections, nine SEC individual titles, 10 SEC relay titles and five SEC records. To top it off she was the first swimmer in SEC history to win four consecutive conference championships in the 100-meter freestyle.

While at Georgia, Shealy was a two-sport athlete, also competing three seasons on the volleyball team, where she was named the team's most valuable player in 1998. Shealy was the first NCAA Division I female student-athlete to compete in two sports on the same day, accomplishing that feat three times at Georgia.

Since graduating cum laude at Georgia with a degree in sports studies/communications, Shealy has worked as a motivational speaker for the NCAA, Coca-Cola, Healthsouth and Arby's, and served as the director of the Golden West Swim Lessons Program in Huntington Beach, Calif., before making her way to UNF.

"I know there is so much more to Courtney than her outstanding resume. I imagine Courtney will have a positive impact on our entire community," Harrell said.
