Standout performances by Aggie Scott Weltz and Gaucho Jennifer Schwalb earned them Big West Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week accolades, for the week ending Oct. 16.

Weltz claimed three individual titles, while adding a relay title at UC Davis' home meet against the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs. The San Jose, Calif., native, won the 1,000 free (9:44.26), 200 breast (2:08.84) and 200 individual medley (1:56.45) and was the first leg of the 200 medley relay. His time in the 1,000 free earned him an eighth place spot in UCSB's record book.

Schwalb is starting the 2006-07 season the same way she began last season, earning athlete of the week honors after posting impressive times in the same three events, 100 fly, 200 fly and 200 IM. Competing against Pac-10 powers UCLA and Oregon State, the Gaucho senior took first place in the 200 IM with a time of 2:05.77. She also swam a time of 2:05.59 in the 200 fly to finish in third. In her final event, the Ridgecrest, Calif, native placed a fifth-best time of 58.1 in the 100 fly.

The UC Davis Aggies return to the pool this week when they travel to Stockton, Calif., for the Pacific Invitational. UC Santa Barbara is idle.
