.: Florida State Sweeps ACC Swimming & Diving Performers of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. , October 17th, 2006

Florida State’s Ian Powell and Christie Raleigh have been selected Atlantic Coast Conference Swimming and Diving Performers of the Week in their respective divisions. The duo helped the Seminoles top Clemson in their season-opener on October 7, en route to collecting the first swimming and diving accolades of the season.

Powell, who receives the men’s performer of the week award, posted a collection of first-place finishes in FSU’s season-opening win two weeks ago. The junior won three individual events (100 butterfly, 200 butterfly, 200 backstroke) and helped his team take the top spot in the 200 medley relay with a 1:31.53 time. His individuals marks of 50:27 (100 fly), 1:49.34 (200 fly), and 1:50.00 (200 back) ranks atop of the league after two weeks of competition.

A native of Toms Rivers, N.J., Raleigh claimed a pair of individual victories and placed third in the 100 backstroke (57.85) in the women’s competition against Clemson. The sophomore took first place in both 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle events, turning in season-best times of 23.03 and 50.72, respectively. She was also part of the first-place 200 medley relay unit that posted a top mark of 1:43.11.

The Seminole women return to action this weekend when they travel to Dallas, Texas, to compete in the SMU Classic. The FSU men will take a week-long break before hitting the pool again on October 28 against Florida Atlantic.
