The University of Vermont swimming and diving team defeated Siena on the road in the opening meet of the year for the Catamounts. Three UVM freshmen records were broken and four Catamount swimmers recorded ECAC qualifying times, highlighting the meet for Vermont.

Vermont went 1-2-3 three in the 1,000 freestyle and the 100 butterfly. Sophomore Lauren Honrath (Monroe, Conn.) led the trio of Catamounts in the 1,000 free winning in a time of 10:52.09 to qualify for ECACÂ’s. Freshman Colleen Withers (Doylestown, Pa.) and junior Lindsay Richardson finished second and third. In the 100 fly, sophomore Eryka Karz (Mt. Prospect, Ill.) paced the group with a winning time of 1:01.31 and was followed by junior Nicole Underhill (South Burlington, Vt.) and freshman Leigh Galligan (Watertown, Mass.).

Freshman Johannah Kos (Feeding Hills, Mass.) picked up two wins in her first collegiate meet, taking the 200 IM in 2:18.59 and the 100 backstroke in 1:02.10. Classmate Amanda Murphy (Burlington, Mass.) placed second in the 100 back (1:03.62).

The Catamounts took the top two spots in the 200-medley relay, as the team of four sophomores in Rachel Kent (Mystic, Conn.), Ashley Gillespie (Ithaca, N.Y.), Karz and Jessica Breitfeller (Irondequoit, N.Y.) won it in a time of 1:56.03.

Freshman Molly MacMillan (Doylestown, Pa.) broke the Vermont freshmen record in the 200 freestyle, winning in 1:57.03, while sophomore Lauren Anderson (Essex, Vt.) came in second. Also breaking a UVM freshmen record was Colleen Clark (Unionville, Conn.) in the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.60. The time set a new Siena pool record and qualified her for ECACÂ’s in the process.

Sophomore diver Katie Nickitas (Greenwich, Conn.) recorded two wins, taking the one and three meter dives. Vermont also won the 200 freestyle relay as freshmen Shiloh Page (Easton, Pa.), Withers, Clark and MacMillan set a new UVM rookie record and qualified for ECACÂ’s in a time of 1:43.00. Page also qualified for ECACÂ’s in the 50 and 100 freestyle events on Saturday.

The Catamounts return to action next Sunday when they travel to take on Niagara starting at 12:00pm.
