The men made a statement on the opening event of the meet as they took the top two spots in the 200 medley relay. Jay Crout, Attila Ruszka, Stewe Fekete, and Mark Vahle grabbed the victory, and were followed by the team of Joel Johnson, Andy Bergren, Jason Chatlosh, and Brian Regone. Sean Geary was the top Tiger finisher in the 1000 freestyle as he recorded a season fastest time of 9:40.93 to place third. Brett MacLennan (1:41.72) and Daniel Mengering (1:42.51) finished in second and third in the 200 freestyle in the next event for Clemson. Joel Johnson then captured his first win of the season in the 100 backstroke (51.31). Attila Ruszka and Adam Farnham recorded back-to-back second place finishes in the 100 breaststroke and 200 butterfly, respectively after JohnsonÂ’s victory. The 50 freestyle was where the momentum swung back to the Tigers as Mark Vahle (20.44), Brian Regone (21.22), and Matt Balderston (21.46) swept the top three spots. Stephen Russell proved the depth for Clemson in the sprint freestyles as he took the win in the 100 freestyle (46.24). Freshman Thomas Recko (1:51.66) and Junior Taylor Thompson (1:53.16) teamed up for a 1-2 finish in the 200 backstroke. Daniel Mengering placed second in the 500 freestyle (4:37.73) with a season best time, and Adam Farnham also had a season best time en route to his win in the 100 butterfly (50.28). Attila Ruszka took the win in the 200 IM for the second straight meet (1:52.96), and then the team of Balderston, Russell, Farnham, and Vahle closed out the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay (3:05.52). David Giambra placed second on both the one-meter (257.85) and three-meter boards (285.10).
The Lady Tigers started off the meet in similar fashion as the team of Ashley Clay, Alexandra Barsanti, Jen Grove and Rachel Regone combined with Mary Paulsen, Katrina Obas, Agata Nowak, and Lauren Sindall for a first and second place finish in the 200 medley relay. Cassy LaRussa won the 200 freestyle (1:53.04) for Clemson just minutes after her third place finish in the 1000 freestyle (10:19.31). Michelle Parkhurst (57.93), Ashley Clay (58.70), and Mary Paulsen (59.55) made it a clean sweep of the 100 backstroke. Senior captain Sarah Cefalu was the top finisher in the 200 butterfly (2:07.74), and was followed by another sweep in the 50 freestyle by Rachel Regone (23.76), Michelle Parkhurst (24.11), and Caitlin Seed (24.53). Danielle Kazilionis won the one-meter diving competition (232.15) and placed second on the three-meter board (227.00) for Clemson. Rachel Regone captured another victory, this time in the 100 freestyle (52.18). The Lady Tigers sealed the victory as Michelle Parkhurst (2:06.37) and Katrina Obas (2:21.47) won the 200 backstroke and 200 breaststroke, respectively. Obas (2:07.26), Cefalu (2:11.52), and Carmen Groenewoud (2:11.85) swept the last event of the meet for Clemson, the 200 IM.
Both Tiger teams will next be in action as they travel to Charlottesville, VA for a two day meet against Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Penn State on October 27-28. The Yellow Jackets will travel to archrival Georgia next Thursday, Oct. 19, to take on the Bulldogs and South Carolina in a tri-meet.
