.: Some Teams Under Fire, W&M On Fire

Williamsburg, VW , October 12th, 2006

While programs at James Madison and Rutgers find themselves under fire, McGee Moody's pool at William & Mary caught fire on Saturday night.

The fire, which began in a storage room for pool chemicals, was quickly brought under control with nearly three dozen people evacuated. The fire has left the filtration pump out of commission and officials were unsure when the pool would reopen.

The team and recreation center staff are working to identify alternate sites. The pool at the College of William and Mary recreation center remains closed after a fire in the building's basement Saturday night. The fire started about 9:45 p.m. in a 4-by-6 foot cinder block room used to store pool chemicals, university spokesman Brian Whitson said. Between 30 and 40 people were evacuated from the center, he said. The Williamsburg Fire Department quickly controlled the flames, but because of the chemicals in the room, a hazardous materials team was also called. Most of the center reopened at 10 a.m. Sunday after passing air quality tests. The room where the fire started is adjacent to a room housing the pool's pumping equipment. Whitson said some ductwork and insulation was damaged in the fire, and the pool's pump is not running at this time. He was unsure when the pool would reopen. In the meantime, recreation center staff are working to identify alternate sites where students can swim. William and Mary police are working with the city fire marshal to investigate the cause of the fire. Coach Moody has arranged for some of his team to train at alternate facilities, though the swimmers are spread out because of a lack of pool time and lane space. In light of this disaster, CollegeSwimming.com and CSCAA underwriter Super Sport Systems, has provided Coach Moody and the team a free subscription to their coaching system. Using 3S's administrative features will enable Moody to distribute workouts, notes, etc. to athletes and accumulate their results via the internet, even though they may be training at different locations or at different times. W&M police and local fire marshall are investigating the cause of the fire. To see what you can do to help the Tribe, you can contact Coach Moody at 757-221-3393.
