Carleton Leads Nationwide Cancer Benefit

The Carleton College swimming and diving teams, along with other MIAC programs and programs across the country, are sponsoring a swim-a-thon to benefit cancer research in memory of teammate Ted Mullin, who passed away from cancer earlier this fall.  Related Article

The swim-a-thon will feature an "hour-of-power" relay practice on Tuesday, Nov. 7 at 4 p.m. central standard time, which will allow east coast schools to be involved. The sets is one of the Knights' favorites and the team felt it would be appropriate to run a "Leave it in the pool" practice consisting of continuous relays, any stroke, all-out swimming, for an hour, with the objective of keeping all relays in each pool on the same length. This set requires swimmers to move around based on their knowledge of their own strengths as well as those of their teammates and to push each other to go beyond their own expectations.
The participants in the event are gathering pledges and donations for the Ted Mullin Cancer Research Fund at the University of Chicago.

Nearly all the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) programs will be involved, along with fellow Division III and New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) programs Middlebury, Colby, Amherst and Bowdoin are also known to be participating in the event. Mullin's younger brother, Evan, is a member of Colby's swimming and diving team.

Mullin lost his two-year battle with cancer on Sept. 3, 2006. A two-time captain, Mullin was originally a member of the class of 2006 but after taking time off for treatments was planning to graduate with the class
of 2007.

"Ted approached everything with an admirable intensity and was never one to settle for less than what he knew was possible," Carleton team co-captain *Karin Brown* said. "While we as his teammates and friends are struggling with the grief of this tremendous loss, we are also working to direct our energy into events to help others as Ted wanted us to. As the captains we are organizing a swim-a-thon event to raise money in the form of pledges or donations for cancer research and we are hoping other teams are eager to participate."

If other teams are interested in participating in the 2006 "Leave it in the pool" swim-a-thon, please contact Carleton head coach Andy Clark at aclark@carleton.edu or at (507)646-4584.
