No. 3 Texas collected four individual victories and pulled away from No. 4 California and No. 12 Indiana on the second and final day of the team’s tri-meet Saturday at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. The Longhorns dealt the Golden Bears a 204-165 defeat and knocked off the Hoosiers by a 210-149 margin. California defeated Indiana by a 202-157 count.
Texas entered Saturday’s session leading California, 118-102 before sophomore Michael Klueh (Evansville, Ind.) took the 1,650-yard freestyle in a NCAA provisional-qualifying time of 15:31.69 to garner his third win of the meet after taking the 500 freestyle and the 400 individual medley on Friday. Junior Matthew McGinnis (Raleigh, N.C.) picked up his second victory of the meet by capturing the 100 freestyle in 43.99, good for a NCAA “B” cut time.
Freshman Ricky Berens (Charlotte, N.C.) continued his outstanding early progress as a collegiate swimmer, collecting his third victory of the meet by posting a NCAA provisional-qualifying time of 1:48.00 in the 200 butterfly. Junior diver Brian Smith (Carrollton, Texas) posted an impressive win in the one-meter diving event with a final score of 354.55.
The 400-freestyle relay quartet of McGinnis, Berens, senior Garrett Weber-Gale (Fox Point, Wis.) and freshman Dave Walters (Yorktown, Va.) took second but collected a NCAA provisional-qualifying time with a mark of 2:59.05. Junior Caleb McDermott (Canyon Lake, Texas) added one final NCAA “B” cut time for the Longhorns when he placed second in the 200 backstroke in 1:46.75.
Overall, Texas captured 12 events in the two-day meet billed as the “Meet of the Week” by Swimming World magazine. The Longhorns return to action on Friday, Nov. 10 at No. 10 Florida. The meet is slated for a 2 p.m. Central start in Gainesville, Fla.
