The No. 4 Arizona women?s swimming and diving team
defeated the No. 7 USC Trojans 128-57 Friday, in the first Pac-10 dual-meet of
the season. The Arizona men?s team completed the first day of competition
against the Trojans, as the scores will be available after tomorrow?s action,
which begins at noon (PST).
The 200 medley relay team of freshman Caitlin Iversen, Annie Chandler,
sophomore Lara Jackson and sophomore Lindsey Kelly started the meet for the
women finishing second with a time of 1:41.85.
Freshman Joni Zimmerman finished second in the 1000 free with a season best
time of 9:56.07 and Junior Lacey Nymeyer won the 200 free with a time of
1:47.97, while sophomore Anna Turner finished third (1:49.73).
The Wildcats took the top-three spots of the 50 free as junior Courtney Cashion
finished first (22.99), Jackson finished second (23.46), and Kelly finished
third (23.52). Again in the 200 IM, Arizona took the top three spots as Iversen
finished first (2:01.28), freshman Jenny Forster was second (2:02.49) and
freshman Andrea Boritzke was third (2:03.87).
?The women swam really well, there was a lot of effort from everyone,? head
swimming coach Frank Busch said. ?The freshmen really stepped up today and
showed how strong of a class they are.?
Forster later finished second in the 200 fly behind USC?s senior Kalyn Keller
with a time of 2:01.73. Cashion, junior Brandy Collins, Turner and Kelly took
the top-four places of the 100 free, as Cashion finished first with a time of
50.37, Collins was second (51.24), Turner was third (51.40) and Kelly was
fourth (51.50).
In the 200 back, Iversen tallied her second individual win with a time of
1:57.72, while Boritzke finished third (2:01.74). Nymeyer finished second in
the500 free with a time of (4:47.92) and junior Jacquelyn Craft won the 200
breast (2:14.60), while Chandler finished third (2:15.37).
Senior Megan MacDonald dominated the diving well, as she won both springboard
events posting 254.25 points in the 1-meter and 247.80 in the 3-meter.
Sophomore Allison Scaife finished second in the 3-meter with 242.70 points and
third in the 1-meter with 222.40 points.
On the men?s side, the 200 medley relay ?B? team began the first day of
competition against the Trojans, as they finished second with a time of
1:28.16. Junior Matt Biel finished second in the 1000 free as well, finishing
with a time of 9:14.04.
In the 200 free, freshman Joel Greenshields finished first (1:38.78) and junior
Darian Townsend finished third (1:39.00). Senior Albert Subirats posted the
second individual win for the Wildcats in the 100 back, finishing with a time
of 47.49, while freshman Jake Tapp finished third (50.56).
Junior Ivan Barnes finished second in the 100 breast (55.62), while sophomore
Josh Arreguin finished third (56.89). In the 50 free, sophomore Nicolas Nilo
finished second with a time of 20.66.
In the 1-meter diving competition, junior Matt Bisordi finished third with
303.95 points and freshman Michael Guilfoil finished fourth (278.85 points).
The women will resume competition Saturday afternoon against UCLA with the
diving events beginning at 11 a.m. (PST) at the Sunset Recreation Center and
swim events beginning at 12 p.m. at the Men's Gym Pool (Student Activities
Center). The men will conclude dual-meet action against the Trojans at
McDonald's Swim Stadium.
