Meet Results

The 10th-ranked University of Michigan women's
swimming and diving team defeated Ohio State 138-99 Friday evening (Nov.
10) at Canham Natatorium. The Wolverines, who improved to 2-0 in the Big
Ten, won 10 of the first 12 events before electing to swim the final two
races exhibition, claiming the fastest time in both.

Freshman Margaret Kelly (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) took first in both
of her individual events (50-yard freestyle and 50-yard butterfly) and
swam the first leg of the winning 400-yard medley relay. Lindsey Smith
(Dexter, Mich./Dexter) also added two wins, posting the top time in both
the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle.

The Wolverines jumped on the Buckeyes early, taking first and second in
the 400-yard medley relay. The foursome of Kelly, Justine Mueller
(Monroe, Mich./Monroe), Kaitlyn Brady (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant)
and Noelle Martin (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds) clocked in at
3:48.43 for the top prize.

After going 2-3 in the 1,000-yard freestyle, Michigan reeled off three
straight wins and a victory in one-meter diving thanks to Elyse Lee's
(Albion, Mich./Albion) score of 305.55. Smith began the winning streak,
earning nine points in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.49). In the next
event, the 50-yard freestyle, Kelly and Brady shared the first and
second-place points, each touching the wall in 23.50 for a first-place
tie.

The Wolverines then claimed the top three spots in the 200-yard
individual medley, putting Ohio State away for good. Payton Johnson
(Champaign, Ill./Centennial) led the way in the event, touching the wall
first in 2:06.39.

After OSU went 1-2-3 in three-meter diving, Kelly and Smith continued
U-M's winning ways, earning the first two of Michigan's four straight
wins. Kelly touched the wall in 25.40 in the 50-yard butterfly and Smith
clocked in at 50.86 in the 100-yard freestyle. Mueller and Emily
Brunemann (Crescent Springs, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) completed the
streak as Mueller clocked in first in the 50-yard backstroke (27.45) and
Brunemann claimed the best time in the 500-yard freestyle (4:54.53).

With the meet well in hand, head coach Jim Richardson elected to swim
the final two races exhibition. That did not deter the Wolverines,
however, as they once again posted the quickest times. Valeria Silva
(Lima, Peru/Alexander Von Humboldt) wrapped up the individual events
with the fastest mark in the 50-yard backstroke (29.86) and the quartet
of Brady, Brunemann, Johnson and Smith capped off the evening,
outlasting the Buckeyes in the 800-yard freestyle (7:31.02).
