.: Pool Records Highlight National Swimmer-of-the-Week Awards

Emory’s Leigh Psaris quickly became familiar with National Collegiate Swimmer-of-the-Week (NCSW) honors as she grabbed her second award in two weeks. Freshman, Jackie Borkowski (West Chester University) claimed her first nod while upperclassmen Caroline Burckle (Univ. of Florida), Ben Hesen (Indiana University), Matej Tomas (Fairmont State University), and Mike Ginder (Washington and Lee) all earned NCSW honors as well. The six were selected based on their performances October 23-29, 2006 by a panel of collegiate coaches and nominated by coaches, sports information directors, conference representatives and CollegeSwimming.com staffers.
Division I
Caroline Burckle, University of Florida
Jr., Louisville, KY
The second-ranked University of Florida women’s swimming and diving team defeated fifth-ranked Georgia, 129-114, at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center on Thursday afternoon. The Gators sprung out to an early advantage in the meet’s first event, as the 400 Medley Relay team claimed victory with an NCAA provisional qualifying time (3:42.61) with Burckle swimming the breaststroke leg (1:02.00). She then posted two individual wins and two NCAA qualifying times against the Bulldogs. She notched Florida’s first NCAA automatic qualifying time of the year in the 500 free (4:45.21) en route to a first-place finish. Burckle also won the 200 free (1:47.64), turning in an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the process.
Ben Hesen, Indiana University
Jr., Jeffersonville, Ind.
Ben Hesen won six of the eight events he entered on the week as IU faced two ranked opponents, highlighted by tying two-time defending national champion Matt Grevers of Northwestern in the 100 backstroke (47.24) on Friday in an NCAA "A" cut time. That time was the sixth-fastest in school history, giving Hesen nine of the top 10 all-time Hoosiers times. Indiana men lost in the end against eighth-ranked Northwestern 163.5 to 136.5.
Division II
Jackie Borkowski, West Chester University
Fr., Norristown, PA
The West Chester University women’s swimming team improved to 3-0 on the season after defeating Division I Lehigh 151-102 on Saturday in Bethlehem, PA. The Golden Rams began the dual-meet event by capturing the 400 medley relay (4:03.36) with Borkowski swimming the freestyle leg (52.61). Borkowski continued on to achieve a NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 50 freestyle (24.71) and a victory in the 100 freestyle (54.10) narrowly missing an NCAA provisional qualifying time by .04 seconds.
Matej Tomas, Fairmont State University

Fairmont State University finished 4th out of 5 teams at the Westminster Relay Carnival at the Westminster Natatorium. The Falcons may not have taken home top honors but three of the relays Tomas were a part of did claim new meet records. The Falcons 3 x 100 butterfly relay (2:40.89) went a new meet record with Tomas turning in an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the leadoff leg along with a new pool record (51.05). He repeated such achievements leading off the 400 Medley Relay (3:34.87) setting another pool record for the 100 backstroke (51.28).
Division III
Leigh Psaris, Emory University
Fr., Waterford, PA
Psaris bested her own school record in the 200 butterfly (2:04.17) that she had set just two weeks in a 142 – 156 loss to the University of North Carolina Wilmington on Saturday, October 28th. In addition to her new record Psaris finished first in the 1000 freestyle (10:24.09) and the 100 butterfly (57.33). Her time in the 100 butterfly is the seventh best in school history. Both of the butterfly times she turned in at the meet are NCAA automatic qualifying times.
Mike Ginder, Washington and Lee University
Sr., Jacksonville, FL
The Washington and Lee men's swimming team opened the 2006-07 season with a win over Transylvania University on Saturday evening by a score of 155 to 100. Senior Mike Ginder won the 200 backstroke (1:55.67) in a pool-record time. The team continued their season-opening weekend with a meet against Centre on Sunday morning. The men won by a score of 117 to 81 with Ginder setting four pool records over the weekend, including a NCAA provisional qualifying time and first-place finish in the 200 free (1:43.32).
