.: Pac-10 Men's Results Finals Day One

Federal Way, WA , March 2nd, 2006

Sixth-ranked Arizona and third-ranked California each one a relay and finished second in the other to finish the first day of the Pac-10 Men's Swimming Championships in a tie. Arizona Seniors Simon Burnett, Lyndon Ferns, Tyler DeBerry and junior Adam Ritter composed the first-place 800 free relay, setting a new Pac-10 meet record and a new school record with a time of 6:18.70. Burnett led off with the fastest 200 freestyle of the season, posting a 1:33.03.

In the first race of the conference championships, the Cal quartet of freshman David Russell, senior Henrique Barbosa, sophomore Jernej Godec and senior Milorad Cavic won the 200-medley relay in an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:25.44.

"We swam great," Cal coach Nort Thornton said. "That was about as good as we could hope for. Both relays we were worried about. To win the medley was a big one, and then the 800 was a big swim for us to set a school record. It's just one day out of four but it's a good way to start off. We're hoping it carries over."

The second day of the Pac-10 Championships begins at 11 a.m. tomorrow, Thursday, with preliminary races. Thursday's action will feature preliminaries for the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley and 50 freestyle. At 6 p.m. the finals of the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle and 200 freestyle relay will be contested. The Pac-10 Championships continue through Saturday.
