Whoever said nobody's perfect wasn't speaking of 114 swimmers in the classroom. That's how many posted perfect 4.0 GPA's over the past semester according to the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. Eighty-two of those swimmers qualified for the NCAA Championships to earn Academic All-American honors while another 33 earned non-qualifying 'B' cuts. In total 394 swimmers fully one-quarter of all national championship qualifiers posted a GPA above 3.50 to earn the academic accolade while another 211 swimmers were named to the Honorable Mention list by posting the grade points above 3.50 while also achieving NCAA 'B' cuts. Emory University led the way with twenty All-Americans, ten of whom earned perfect 4.0 GPA's. Auburn led the way in Division I with fifteen swimmers earning individual honors.
As with the team awards, individual honors were well up over last year when 496 swimmers were cited for their grades. In 2004 504 swimmers were named to the two lists. To earn Academic All-American status, student athletes must earn a minimum of a 3.5 GPA and qualify for the NCAA, NAIA or NJCAA championships. Student-athletes with a 3.5 GPA who earn NCAA 'B' times are eligible for Academic All-American Honorable Mention status.
