On the women's side, sophomore Caitlin Andrew (San Antonio, Texas) won the 50-yard freestyle and the 200-yard backstroke to lead the Sun Devils. Andrew also swam the third leg of the 400-yard medley relay that captured first place to help seal first place for the Sun Devils. ASU swept the top three spots in the 100-yard breaststroke with senior Heidi Schmidt (Visalia, Calif.) leading the way recording a time of 1:04.37. Finishing in second and third in the event were freshman Amy Konowalik (Derby, England) and junior Christine Creek (Simi Valley, Calif.) respectively. Sophomore Ellis Schieman (Shaker Heights, Ohio) touched the wall 2:07.37 to take first place in the 200-yard butterfly.
ASU men took first place in three events on the first day of competition against Purdue. Sophomore C.J. Nuess (Medical Lake, Wash.) touched the wall in 1:51.00 to capture the title in the 200-yard IM. Sophomore Lucas Azevedo (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:27.44. ASU took the top two spots in the 200-yard butterfly with senior David Kolozar (Budapest, Hungary) taking first and Nuess placing second. Nuess also recorded his best time of the season in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:52.17, placing second in the event. Overall, Nuess tallied 17 individual points for the Sun Devils.
Men's swimming will continue competition against Purdue and the women will host Oregon State tomorrow with action beginning at 12 p.m. MST at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
