The No. 8 Minnesota men's swimming and diving team improved to 10-0 in dual meet action with victories over No. 15 Purdue and Wisconsin this weekend at University Aquatic Center. The Gophers defeated the Boilermakers 219-134 and the Badgers 281-72. Senior Adam Mitchell completed a sweep of his four individual events by winning the 400 individual medley and 200 backstroke this afternoon. The Gophers won six of the nine events today and 13 of 20 overall.

Mitchell, who cruised to wins in the 200 free and 200 individual medley on Friday night, completed a perfect weekend on Saturday afternoon. In the 400 IM, Mitchell destroyed the field with a time of 3:50.99 to win by over eight seconds. Purdue's Romain Maire was a distant second in 3:59.26. The Gophers' Russ Payne finished fourth in 4: 00.89.

Just two events later, Mitchell touched out teammate David Plummer to win the 200 backstroke in a time of 1:47.40. Plummer clocked a 1:47.55 and Mike Woodson finished fourth in 1:51.14.

Junior Igor Cerensek led a Gophers' 1-2-3 finish in the 100 freestyle by touching the wall first in 44.62. Mario Delac was second in 45.13 and Tyler Schmidt was third in 46.00. Senior Travis Beckerle held off Wisconsin's Tom Molzahn in the 500 freestyle to win in 4:30.54. Molzahn finished just .33 seconds behind while Zach Wood took fourth for Minnesota in 4:33.42.

Purdue's Chris Etherington took first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 48.70 while the Gophers' Dan Berve was second in 49.55 and Evan Bernier was third in 49.71. Neil Osten also finished fourth in 49.96. Purdue's Giordan Pagioli easily won the 200 breaststroke in 1:58.72 while Jason Timmer led Minnesota in third at 2:05.46. Drew Knoechel took fourth in 2:06.12.

Minnesota had a strong showing in platform diving, taking four of the top six spots led by Joe Skeate in second with a score of 315.95. Shaun Kennedy was third (315.00), Cole Young was fifth (295.45) and John Schmidt was sixth (285.90).

Minnesota completed a sweep of the relays by finishing first and second in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. In the 200, the Gopher A team of Colin Lee- To, Osten, Ales Volcansek and Delac won in 1:21.62. The B team of Woodson, Berve, Schmidt and Matt Engel posted a time of 1:22.66 to finish second. In the 400 free relay, Mitchell, Delac, Osten and Cerensek posted a solid time of 2;57.41 to win while the B team of Woodson, Schmidt, Kiel Ochalek and Bernier was second in 3:02.04.

Minnesota hosts the Minnesota Challenge on Feb. 3-4 at University Aquatic Center.
