.: SMU Women Defeat Rice 135.5-69.5

HOUSTON , January 21st, 2006

Rice sophomore Brittany Massengale broke her own school record in the 1,000-yard freestyle, but it was the SMU swim team that swept all 11 events on the way to a 135.5--69.5 Conference USA dual meet win over the Owls Friday evening at the Rice Pool.

Massengale logged a new Rice-best in the 1,000 while SMU sophomore Anja Carman won the event with a new pool record time of 9:55.10. The Mustangs showed why they are the eighth-ranked team in the country, winning all 11 events with 1-2 finishes in three of the races. Carman also won the 100-backstroke with a time of 56.32. Jenny Basel was also a multi-winner for SMU, taking the 400-individual medley (4:25.40) and 100-breaststroke (1:04.66).

Massengale originally set the Rice record in the 1,000 as a freshman in 2005. She trimmed a full two seconds off the mark while battling with Carman. Rice freshman Carlyann Miller came from behind on the final 50 yards to register a tie for second with SMU's Celina Lemman in the in the 200-freestyle.
