The Florida State men’s (No. 14) and women’s (No. 17) swimming and diving teams picked up a total of six wins in their last home meet of the season, which was also senior day. The men defeated Florida Atlantic 230-68.5, Florida A&M 242-13 and Indian River C.C. 215-78 improving their record to 9-2. The women beat FAU 165-134, FAMU 242-26 and Indian River C.C. 224-69 upping their record to 12-1.

“The fact that we ended up with three wins on both sides is good,” said head coach Neil Harper. “We had a little scare with Florida Atlantic women’s team who swam really well. I think it was a good testament to our ladies to band together with three of our NCAA qualifiers missing as well as a few others. When you are down four or five swimmers it can impact the team mentally and physically. I was proud that we didn’t have to lose to learn a lesson of how to be a good team.”

“The men looked pretty good,” said Harper. “They were sharp and I think they handled the races pretty well. I’m excited that we get to move onto another test with Auburn next week. It will be a great test for us on the road and there will be a little bit of adversity for us but I think this team is ready for that. I very happy with were we are.”

The men got off to a fast start picking up their first win in the 200 medley relay. The team of senior Joel Roycik, junior Alex Kennon, and sophomores Ian Powell and Billy Jamerson took first with a time of 1:31.95.

Junior Steve Roof followed up the relay with another win for the men taking the 1000 free with a time of 9:24.38. Roof would record his second win in the 500 free with a time of 4:31.96.

“Steve is very reliable and it is good to see that he can contribute,” said Harper.

Senior Stephan Connor then finished in first place for FSU in the 200 free with a time of 1:42.08. Sophomore Carl Marais finished first in the 100 back with a time of 51.05. Jamerson continued the Seminoles winning ways taking the 100 breast with a time of 56.29.

Roycik recorded a pair of first place finishes for the Seminoles in the 100 free (45.34) and 100 fly (50.03).

“It was Joel’s last home meet and he had his wife and parents present,” said Harper. “He was on both of the winning relays and won a couple of individual events in-between. It was just a great performance for him and a great way to finish.”

Sophomore Jarryd Botha scored yet another win for Florida State taking the 200 back in 1:51.88. Junior Paul Erben then won the 200 breast in 2:05.92. Sophomore Danny Keeling closed out the individual men’s swimming events with a win in the 200 IM in 1:54.03.

On the women’s side, Junior Romy Altmann had an outstanding meet as she picked up three wins for the Seminoles. She started out by recording back-to-back wins in the 200 free in 1:52.20 and the 100 back in 57.13. Later in the meet Altmann would claim her third victory taking the 200 back with a time of 2:02.55.

“It was a tough double to win but we wanted to put her in that position since at the conference meet that may well be a double for her,” said Harper. “It was good experience for her and she definitely helped us to get the win.”

Freshmen Abbie King and Ann Cipoletti each finished first for FSU, winning the 50 free (24.17) and 200 breast (2:17.43), respectively. Sophomore Lauren Sparg finished first in the 100 fly touching in 56.45. Freshman Georgia Holderness closed out the individual women’s swimming events with a win in the 200 IM in 2:07.20.

In diving, junior Brittany Lerew swept both boards for the women taking the 3M with 316.55 points and 1M with 256.70 points. Freshman Scott Derner also swept both boards for the men taking the 3M with 335.00 points and 1M with 323.05 points.

The meet concluded with the men’s 200 free relay team of Kennon, Botha, Connor and Roycik taking first with a time of 1:23.33.
