January 18th, 2006

Northwestern's Matt Grevers and Penn State's Adam Pierce have been named Big Ten Men's Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively. Grevers won four of six events for the Wildcats over the weekend, while Pierce swept the diving events for the Nittany Lions against St. Bonaventure.

The Big Ten is also honoring Michigan's Kaitlyn Brady and Purdue's Carrie McCambridge. Both athletes claimed Big Ten Swimmer and Diver of the week, respectively. Brady helped the Wolverines to a second place finish with 1,111 points at the Michigan Invitational. McCambridge posted two first-place finishes on the boards while Purdue defeated Illinois State last weekend.

Grevers garners his fifth career Swimmer of the Week honor after having one of the best all-around weekends for Northwestern as the Wildcats took second-place at the Dallas Morning News Swimming and Diving Classic with 331 team points. The junior placed first in three individual events and second in one, while helping two relays record victories. In doing so, Grevers also notched two NCAA "A" and four "B" qualifying marks. He defeated Florida Olympian Ryan Lochte in the 100-yard backstroke with an "A" time of 47.16. He went on to record his second "A" mark in the 200 backstroke, touching the wall first in 1:43.66. The Lake Forest, Ill., native claimed two "B" marks in the 100 and 200 freestyle events, clocking in at 43.68 and 1:36.13, respectively. He wrapped up his performance for the weekend by helping his 200 (1:28.71) and 400 (3:14.85) medley relay teams notch two more NCAA "B" qualifying standards.

Pierce collects his fifth Diver of the Week accolade this season after posting a first-place finish in the diving well to help the Nittany Lions to a 136-92 win over St. Bonaventure on Saturday. The senior claimed the one-meter board with a score of 395.18. He went on to score 376.95 points on in the three-meter competition although no places were awarded. Pierce has now received weekly honors six times in his career.

Brady garners Swimmer of the Week laurels after a solid meet at the Michigan Invitational as the junior won three individual events and helped three Wolverine relays to first-place finishes. The Wilmington, Del., native posted NCAA "B" consideration times in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events in 55.74 and 2:00.47, respectively. In addition, she claimed first in the 100 butterfly competition with a time of 55.75. Brady rounded out the weekend by swimming on three first-place relays as Michigan claimed the 200 (1:34.74) and 400 (3:25.25) freestyle relay races before winning the 200 medley relay in a 1:45.32 fashion. This is the fifth weekly accolade of her career and third of the season, as she also claimed the Nov. 8 and 22 Swimmer of the Week awards.

McCambridge collects the eighth weekly diving award of her career after posting two first-place finishes as Purdue defeated Illinois State, 216-79, over the weekend. The senior swept the diving events on Saturday, reclaiming the school and varsity record from teammate Amanda Miller in the three-meter competition with a score of 361.05.
