.: James Madison Splits With Delaware

HARRISONBURG, VA , January 14th, 2006

James Madison and Delaware squared off in a Colonial Athletic Association dual swimming and diving meet Saturday afternoon at Savage Natatorium, resulting in a split between the two schools. The JMU men posted a 126-108 victory, while the Delaware women’s team left town with a 136-107 triumph.

The JMU men took first and second in the 400-yard medley relay and cruised on to improve to 3-2 in duals. The Dukes went on to win six individual events and picked up a healthy portion of second-place and third-place finishes.

Senior captain Brad Burton (Richmond, Va./J.R. Tucker), junior Josh Fowler (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) and freshman Russell Smyth (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper Co.) each won races and teamed with freshman Tom Martin (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) to capture first in the 400-yard medley relay in three minutes and 323.67 seconds. Burton won the 200-yard butterfly (1:59.75), Fowler took the 200-yard backstroke (1:56.09), and Smyth was the fastest in a tight 200-yard freestyle (1:47.77) finish. Sophomore Brian Freitag (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper) was the first to the wall in the 200-yard individual medley (1:57.10) with junior teammate Mitch Dalton (Brisbane, Australia/Brisbane Boys’ College) close behind in second (1:58.94). Frietag also led a dominating performance that saw the Dukes take the top four places in the 200-yard breaststroke. Frietag (2:10.66), Dalton (2:12.12), Smyth (2:13.13) and freshman Ryon Williams (Yorktown, Va./York), (2:21.67) respectively finished in the race.

JMU’s other individual victory came in the 500-yard freestyle where junior Joe Moore (Chesterfield, Va./Manchester) won in 4:52.95. JMU freshman Andrew Wingert (Damascus, Md./Damascus) earned a second-place (4:53.34) by a little more than one second.

For the 4-2 JMU women, junior Allison Keel (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) swept the top three sprint races, winning the 50-yard free (24.51), 100- yard free (52.71) and 200-yard free (1:54.20), earning her five wins in two days, including the 50 and 100 sprints in Friday’s win against Radford.

Seniors Christine Filak (Clifton, Va./Centreville) and Rebecca Schofield (Newport News, Va./Woodside), and freshman Ashton Goodwille (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) all won races for the Dukes. Filak took the 200-yard backstroke (2:08.84), Schofield the 200-yard individual medley (2:12.76) and Goodwillie the 200-yard butterfly (2:12.05). The Dukes also picked up a second (2;13.40) from freshman Paige Gray (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) and a third (2:13.76) from freshman Jessica Lee (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) in the 200 butterfly.

The Dukes will travel to Norfolk, Va. for their next meet on Jan. 21 before hosting their only remaining home meet on Feb. 4 against the College of William and Mary and Davidson College. The Monarchs of Old Dominion will entertain the Dukes along with associate CAA member College of Charleston with a 1 p.m. first horn.
