.: James Madison Closes Season With Wins Against Davidson, William & Mary
HARRISONBURG, Va. , February 7th, 2006
For the men, Josh Fowler is only a junior on the James Madison University men’s swimming and diving team, but he was a main cog in the final appearance for the seniors as the Dukes dominated their Colonial Athletic Association brethren Saturday afternoon at Savage Natatorium.
Fowler won three individual races and started the afternoon as the leadoff in the Dukes’ winning 200-yard medley relay. His individual triumphs came in the 100-yard backstroke (50.95), the 200-yard backstroke (1:54.94) and the 100-yard butterfly (52.29).
Fowler teamed with seniors Brad Burton and RJ Dunn, and freshman Russell Smyth to win the medley relay (1:34.6), each of who also won individual events. Burton was first in the 200-yard butterfly (1:56.24), Dunn churned out win in the 50-yard freestyle (21.03), and Smyth broke away in the 100-yard breaststroke (58.22).
Sophomore Brian Freitag double-dipped into the victory column, pulling out the 200-yard breaststroke (2:08.63) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:55.69).
Sophomore diver Kyle Knott got the Dukes off to a strong start by sweeping the morning’s competition. He scored a 228.80 on the one-meter board and posted a 199.85 on the three- meter board.
Junior John Chartier had a good day of scoring for the Dukes. He won the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.59) and placed second in both the 50-yard freestyle (21.28) and 100-yard freestyle (47.96) races.
Freshman Matt Fox was right behind Chartier in the 50 with a time of 21.53 seconds, giving the Dukes a sweep of the top three spots. The Dukes technically took the top four spots, but freshman Dan Smullen was an exhibition entry. His time was 21.59 seconds.
For the women, the difference of 1.2 seconds kept the James Madison University women’s swimming and diving team from earning a sweep against fellow Colonial Athletic Association members William and Mary and Davidson in the Dukes’ final dual meet of the season Saturday afternoon at Savage Natatorium.
The Dukes’ head-to-head battle with the Tribe came down to the final race. JMU’s 400-yard freestyle relay squad of redshirt senior Christine Filak, senior Megan Loucks, freshman Meghan Heil and junior Allison Keel won in a time of 3 minutes and 33.16 seconds. However, the Tribe would take second place and squeeze out a third-place finish to claim the upper hand in the final score.
Of course, a place here or there anywhere in the meet could have been pointed to as the difference.
Freshmen contributed triumphs in the 200-yard butterfly and 50-yard freestyle.
Aston Goodwillie continued to win with her consistent time in the fly, clocking a 2:09.30 Saturday. It was her sixth 200 race of the season, five of which have ended at 2:09 and some change. She has finished first in 11 butterfly races, 100 or 200, this season.
Heil was the fastest in the 50 free. She touched in 24.63.
