.: Washington State Women Stop Idaho Vandals with 135-70 Victory
MOSCOW, Idaho , February 4th, 2006
"It's always a challenge to race the Idaho at home," said WSU Head Swimming Coach Erica Quam. "They stepped up and raced us tough and that kept us fighting for finishes. We got what we needed out of this meet and we were able to make some adjustments and swim much better in the second half to get it done."
Changstrom secured the top spot in back-to-back races finishing first in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:34.40 and adding her second win after the first break with a time of 2:08.69 in the 200 butterfly. Changstrom, along with Afton Pickett, Monika Povilonyte, and Lindsay Backhouse also swam to victory in the 400 medley relay (3:56.53).
McCleave finished first in the 200 (1:52.26) and 500 (5:05.58) freestyle events and combined with Jamie MacLeod, Katie Van Horne and Povilonyte for a win in the 200 freestyle relay (1:36.91).
Van Horne posted a win in the 100 freestyle (53.19), Pickett and Lina Daugvilaite added victories in the 200 backstroke (2:06.14) and 1650 freestyle (17:40.23) with Jane Copland rounding out the Cougars? top finishes with a first place showing in the 200 breaststroke (2:21.63).
The Vandals' lone win came in the 50 freestyle with Idaho's Bryn Spores besting the field with a time of 24.31, just out touching WSU?s Elyse Peterson (24.39). The win marks the Cougars? second victory over the Vandals this season as Washington State wraps up its dual meet schedule with a record of 4-2.
"Now we'll get some rest as we prepare for Pac-10s," Quam continued. "Our confidence is high, especially after that close win against Oregon State. We aren't taking anything for granted and I really feel like we are exactly where we need to be as team to be successful at the conference meet."
The Cougars tackle their Pacific-10 rivals at the 2006 Pac-10 Championships Feb. 22-25, in Long Beach, Calif.
