.: Pitt Dominates Duquesne, Clarion

PITTSBURGH , February 4th, 2006

In the Panther seniors’ final home meet of the regular season, Pitt women dominated the pool with huge victories over Duquesne and Clarion, defeating the Dukes 214-72 and the Golden Eagles 197-97. Pitt finishes the season 9-3.

For the men, Pitt dominated the meet with wins over Duquesne and Clarion, defeating the Dukes 212-51 and the Golden Eagles 208-63. Pitt finishes the season 10-2.

The women started the meet off with a victory in the 200 medley relay, and kept swimming strong throughout the day. The team of junior Andrea Shoust, freshman Ruth Seiffert, senior Kelly Redcay and sophomore Kelly O’Hara finished with a time of 1:46.88.

Next in the 1000 free, freshman Laura Rosenburg touched first for the Panthers at 10:44.83.

Pitt swept the 200 free as junior Kathy Suida finished first, senior Amy Miteff second and freshman Shannon Barr third. Later, Miteff finished first in the 200 fly.

In her final meet at Pittsburgh, Jordan Wallace captured first in the 100 back with a time of 57.91. Pitt earned yet another first-place finish in the 100 breast with Seiffert setting a new personal best at 1:05.75.

The Panthers swept their second event of the day in the 50 free. Once again, Redcay touched first for Pitt, followed by junior Kristin Brown and Wallace.

Brown went on to claim first in the 100 free with a time of 51.62, while Shoust swam a 2:04.09 in the 200 back to earn the Panthers yet another first-place finish and her second one of the day.

Seiffert and Miteff weren’t finished with two first-place finishes for the meet. Seiffert added another in the 500 free with a time of 5:07.95 and Miteff touched first at 57.58 in the 100 fly to push their total to three apiece on the day. Suida earned her second top finish of the meet in the 200 IM, finishing with a time of 2:08.33.

For the men, the Panthers started the meet off claiming their first of many first-place finishes of the day in the 200 medley relay. The team of senior Tommy Bird, sophomore Warren Barnes, senior Chad White and freshman Patrick Mansfield took first with a time of 1:33.05

Freshman John Buchanan swam to a first-place finish in the 1000 free with a time of 9:38.29. In fact, Pitt swept its next three events including the 200 free, the 100 back and the 100 breast.

Junior Nathan McCutcheon, freshman Andrew Kyrejko and sophomore Chris George swept the 200 free.

In a perfect finish for their last meet, the senior triad of Bird, Michael Bernardi and Jason Miller swept the 100 back, while Barnes, junior Dave Montgomery and sophomore Jared Martin took the 100 breast.

Sophomore David Anderson swam to a first place finish in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:55.45, while Jeff Leath touched in 1:54.89 and claimed first in the 200 back.

Pitt continued to dominate the meet, sweeping the next four events, the 200 breast, 500 free, 100 fly and the 200 IM.

It was Barnes, Montgomery and Martin repeating in the 200 breast, while teammates Miller, Ross Lannan and Scott Shearer claimed all three spots in the 500 free.

In the team’s fifth sweep of the day, Bird claimed his third first-place finish and was followed by White and Darryl Washington to capture the top three spots in the 100 fly. The Panthers weren’t done with five sweeps, and went on to take the 200 IM as well with Buchanan touching first, followed by Kyrejko second and Martin third.

Pitt’s divers had a successful day as well, sweeping the 3M boards. Sophomore Jeremy Shultz finishing first, followed by freshman Alex Volovetski and senior Adam Natishyn.
