.: Missouri Caps Off Season With 170-129 Win Over Nebraska
COLUMBIA, Mo. , February 4th, 2006
"This is great momentum for us as we head into the conference meet," Mizzou head coach Brian Hoffer said. "Our strokes were really good today, and they showed off our depth. I'm happy with the attitude and energy we showed after getting home from Drury late last night. Our women showed a lot of toughness."
In addition to winning two individual events each against Nebraska, junior Shannon Hogan and senior Liz Schoborg both set MAC pool records in the win. Hogan won the 100 free in a pool-record 51.56, while Schoborg bettered her own pool record in the 200 fly with the winning time of 2:02.70. Hogan's other win came in the 50 free (23.51) and Schoborg also placed first in her final collegiate dual race - the 100 fly (56.53).
Joining Hogan and Schoborg as multiple-event winners on the afternoon were sophomore Jill Bastien and freshman diver Kendra Melnychuk. Bastien claimed victories in the 100 and 200 breast, with times of 1:04.69 and 2:21.01, respectively. Melnychuk carded a 255.82 on the 1-meter board and a 276.00 on the 3-meter board for a pair of wins.
Junior co-captain Amy Charley picked up a win in the 100 back (58.47) and freshman Lori Halvorson chipped in with a win in the 200 back (2:03.42).
The 200 free proved to be one of the key events for the Tigers, who expanded their lead in a close meet courtesy of two freshman. Lauren Cox turned in a time of 1:50.82 - just .29 away from a school record - to take second and Halvorson finished third with a lifetime-best 1:51.00.
Another freshman, Carly Sullivan, swam a 10:08.69 in the 1000 free to finish second in the event move into second place in school history. Other Mizzou runner-up finishes were turned in by freshman Allie Bennett in the 100 back (58.68), freshman Coralie Baumann in the 100 (57.65) and 200 fly (2:05.41), sophomore Sarah Menefee in the 200 back (2:05.11), freshman Erin Yeager in the 200 breast (2:22.19) and junior Kim Massaro on the 3-meter board (272.93).
"To have some of our women going lifetime bests and almost breaking school records is great at this point in the season," Hoffer said. "I didn't know what to expect coming in, but I definitely didn't expect to be as dominating as we were. We showed how mentally tough we are today."
