In a time of 1:31.52, LSU's group of Katherine Noland, Colleen Bertirotti, Katie Gilmore and Heather Brand also claimed the fastest mark in the Southeastern Conference and the fourth-best time in the nation. The strong "B" cut overtook the old school record (1:32.68) set by the group of Heather Hageman, Jessica Montegut, Cindy Unruh and Lucy Findlay in 1993.
"One of my goals was to make that next push and this was a start," said head coach Adam Schmitt. "This is a spark for where we want to go as a program -- to put LSU on the SEC and national scene."
With the new clocking, LSU will take the No. 1 seed into the event at the SEC Championships, Feb. 15-18, in Knoxville, Tenn. Georgia had owned the previous top swim last December (1:32.47).
"We knew right from the beginning what we wanted to do," said Brand, who anchored the race. "We thrive off this kind of pressure. Right now we are on a roll, and we want to get even faster at SECs."
Schmitt and the group had expectations of shattering the pool and school record entering Friday but more importantly wanted to establish a quality time for the postseason meets that follow.
"All along I am thinking what I can do to help these girls get to the NCAA Championships," added Schmitt. "Day-in and day-out we compete and that is the No. 1 goal we have in mind."
The race closed a dual-meet season for LSU in which the team finished over the .500 mark with a 6-5 record. The Lady Tigers concluded with victories over five out of their last six opponents.
For Tulane, it was the final meet in the program's history as the Green Wave try to defend their Conference USA title next month. Swimming and diving has been suspended at the university in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Brand and Bertirotti were instrumental in helping LSU take first in the 400 medley relay to open the meet. Together, they joined Berit Aljand and Sarah Bedell to win with a mark of 3:52.63.
The Lady Tigers would rack up first and second-place finishes in the next three events, highlighted by wins from Clare Schepens in the 1000 free (10:20.86), Noland in the 200 free (1:52.26) and Bertirotti in the 50 free (23.36).
Senior co-captai n Jenna Molinski posted a pair of victories on the day, capturing the 400 individual medley (4:29.84) and 200 butterfly (2:06.43).
Noland continued her impressive freshman resume with another win in the 100 free (51.37), while Aljand claimed an individual first-place honor in the 200 backstroke (2:04.29).
Perhaps the most impressive individual swim of the day came from sophomore Katy Leininger. Leininger, a native of Madisonville, La., captured the 500 free in a career-fast time of 5:08.54.
LSU went 1-2-3 in both diving events. Paige Brown won the 3-meter (283.48) and Hali Saucier won the 1-meter (292.50).
"It was a good performance," said diving coach Doug Shaffer. "I am confident with where we are at heading into SECs and NCAAs. I feel we are a year better than we were last time around."
