Meet Results

Seven pool records fell, including four set by Wolverines, as the sixth-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team toppled No.15 Northwestern 166-125, Saturday (Feb. 4) at the Norris Aquatics Center in Evanston, Ill.

Freshman Matt Patton highlighted the day for the Maize and Blue with Norris Aquatics Center pool records in the 500- (4:24.71) and 1,000-yard freestyle (8:57.92) events. Captains Chris DeJong and Davis Tarwater set pool records of their own in the 200-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly, respectively.

Michigan (7-0, 5-0 Big Ten) and Northwestern began the day strong, each posting NCAA consideration times in the 400-yard medley relay. Michigan's quartet of DeJong, Andrew Albright, Tarwater and Evan Ryser could not match the Wildcats' pool-record pace (3:14.96), as they finished second with a time of 3:15.41.

After sitting out last weekend's meets, Patton returned to the pool strong as ever with his first win and pool record of the day in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Christian Sprang and Johnny Austermann notched strong times of their own, touching the wall in 9:16.18 and 9:18.91, respectively, to round out the top three. Patton's second record came in the latter half of the meet as he posted sub-27 second splits in his final five laps of the 500-yard freestyle to edge out teammate Peter Vanderkaay (4:28.07) and erase Elliot Rushton's (Kenyon) previous mark.

Vanderkaay and freshman Bobby Savulich each met the NCAA 'B' split as they finished 1-2 in the 200-yard freestyle. Vanderkaay touched in at 1:37.41, while Savulich swam 0.7 seconds faster than the Wildcats' Eric Nilsson in the final split to take over second in a time of 1:38.08.

Northwestern's Matt Grevers, defending NCAA champion in the 100-yard backstroke, posted a pool-record 46.85 to take first in the event. Runner-up DeJong earned a NCAA consideration time of 47.89. Ahead by just 0.01 at the halfway point of the 100-yard breaststroke, Grant Burtch was unable to hold off the competition as Northwestern's David Kormushoff swam to the Wildcats' second consecutive victory.

Tarwater led a 1-2-3 finish for the Wolverines in the 200-yard butterfly. The senior swam an NCAA 'B' standard time of 1:47.71, with Alex Vanderkaay and Curtis Dauw rounding out the top three.

After the Wildcats claimed the top two spots in the 50-yard freestyle, Peter Vanderkaay swam to his second NCAA 'B' standard in the 100-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 44.59 for first place.

DeJong and Burtch later returned the favor on Grevers and Kormushoff, respectively. DeJong set a pool record of his own in the race of the day, the the 200-yard backstroke. The senior jumped out to an early lead, as Grevers started a late charge. DeJong held him off by 0.18, however, with a full 15m kick on the final 25. Both of their times were NCAA 'A' cuts. Burtch earned his first victory of the day in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing in 2:04.18, more than a second ahead of Kormushoff.

Tarwater broke the final Norris Aquatics Center record of the day in the 100-yard butterfly. The senior narrowly missed the NCAA 'A' mark by 0.39 to notch a time of 47.64.

In the diving pool, Jon Donadee earned his first victory of the season on the three-meter springboard with a score of 347.55. Kyle Howard posted Michigan's top mark on the one-meter board, posting a 347.93, just 3.07 points of Northwestern's Mike Oxman, who took first.

The Wolverines also touched the wall first in the meet's final two events, but no points were earned as they swam exhibition. The Wildcats had Grevers scheduled to swim the IM, but pulled him for the final relay leaving Alex Vanderkaay untouched in the event. Grevers led off with a 43.59 and gave way to Eric Nilsson. Dejong took control of the race in the third length while David Kormushoff lost his goggles to split a 47.87. The elder Vanderkaay finished up with an anchor split of 45.06.
