.: Utah Splits With BYU

PROVO, UT , February 3rd, 2006

Utah’s women’s swimming and diving team captured their third straight MWC regular season title and second outright title after defeating BYU 128-115. The men’s team fell to the Cougars, 109-134.

The women finished the regular season with at 9-1 overall record and a perfect 8-0 mark in conference dual meets. This marks the second straight year the women haven’t lost a conference dual meet. The women’s only loss came at the hands of the Denver Pioneers on Nov. 4, 2005. The men fall to 4-3 overall, 2-3 MWC on the season.

“It’s was a great meet all around,” said Head Coach Michael Litzinger. “The effort our guys gave was superb and I’m proud of our women for winning their third straight title. However, we’re not done, we still have our sights set on the MWC Championships and advancing to the NCAAs.”

BYU’s women’s team came out swinging, winning two of the first three events. However, Utah would regain the lead after finishing 1-2-3 in the 50 free and never trail for the rest of the meet.

The women were led by Amber Walter and Kelsey Patterson who notched two individual wins apiece. Walter won the 50 free with a time of 23.19. Walter was followed by Amy Barefield (24.31) and Amber Walker (24.57) who finished second and third in the event, respectively.

Walter also took top honors in the 100 free, winning with a time of 51.08 seconds. Alison McInturff finished third in the event with a time of 52.37 seconds. Walter, McInturff and Barefield also competed on the winning 400 free relay team, along with Jennifer Fredsall, that finished with a time of 3 minutes, 29.00 seconds.

Patterson won the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. Patterson tallied 285.38 points in the 1-meter before scoring 326.93 points in the 3-meter. Anna Braszkewiecz finished fourth in the 1-meter (239.25) and third in the 3-meter with 256.05 points.

Rachael Curci won the 1000 free with a time of 10 minutes, 36.53 seconds. Fellow Ute Adrienne Coburn finished third in the event with a time of 10 minutes, 43.56 seconds. Curci also finished second in the 500 free with a time of 5 minutes, 07.93 seconds.

In the 200 back, Marissa Martin and Shannon McQueen finished first and second, respectively. Martin posted a time of 2 minutes, 02.75 seconds, while McQueen finished in 2 minutes, 04.69 seconds.

For the men, Sterling Richards won both diving events. Richards set a new school record in the 1-meter event, tallying 388.95 points, breaking the previous record he set earlier this year. In the 3-meter, Richards tallied 358.58 points. Damien Brown finished second in both events, scoring 284.10 points in the 1-meter and 301.58 points in the 3-meter.

Senior Jonathan Larsen won the 100 free with a time of 45.02 seconds. Larsen finished second in the 50 free with a time of 20.80 seconds. In the 200 back, Andrew Cole took top honors with a time of 1 minute, 50.91 seconds, while David Johnson finished second in the event with a time of 1 minute, 52.65 seconds.

In the 1000 free, Adam Oliver and Eric Jorgensen finished second and third, respectively. Oliver finished in 9 minutes, 48.74 seconds, while Jorgensen finished in 9 minutes, 54.06 seconds. Jeremy Clark finished second in the 200 free after finishing in 1 minute, 42.40 seconds.

Nick Philpot and Michel DeCarolis finished second and third, respectively, in the 200 IM. Philpot finished with a time of 1 minute, 58.26 seconds, while DeCarolis finished in 1 minute, 58.40 seconds.

The Utes take a small break to prepare for the MWC Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla., Feb. 22-25.
