Clarion’s women took the team title with 928.5 points, while West Chester was second with 890.5 and IUP third with 578 points. Rounding out the thirteen team field are fourth place Bloomsburg at 489, Shippensburg fifth with 417.5, Lock Haven sixth with 341, California seventh with 317.5, Edinboro eighth with 268, Kutztown ninth with 256, Slippery Rock tenth with 212, East Stroudsburg eleventh with 149, Millersville twelfth at 121 and Mansfield thirteenth with 64.
For Clarion it is the 26th PSAC team title since the championship was started in 1976. Clarion has won 26 of the 31 PSAC Women’s Swimming Championships ever held.
In individual events on Saturday night, West Chester’s Kathrin Dumitru, who was named the Women’s “Swimmer of the Meet”, won back to back events in the 200 breaststroke (2:17.34) and the 200 butterfly (2:03.60), plus was part of the winning 400 free relay team (3:30.73). Teammate Tammy Leane won the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:02.07 and also was part of the 400 free relay.
Other women’s winners included IUP’s Luci Plaxton in the 100 free (52.09) and Bloomsburg’s Ashley Yelinek in the 1650 (17:32.90).
Clarion’s Lori Leitzinger was second in the 200 backstroke (2:07.19), Brittany Hanzl was second in the 100 freestyle (53.26), Jess Kretz was fourth (2:28.05) and teammate Denise Simens fifth (2:28.27) in the 200 breaststroke. In the 200 fly Clarion’s Brehan Heebner was fourth (2:11.51) and the 400 free relay team of Hanzl, Reade, Cattoni and Clarke were third.
West Chester’s Men had a big night on Saturday as Cody Clauser won the 1650 (16:04.02), Devin Canfield won the 200 backstroke (1:53.93), Reggie Shearer won the 100 freestyle (45.43), Jeremy Sherin won the 200 breaststroke (2:10.30) and Joerg Zimmermann won the 200 butterfly.
WC’s 400 free relay team of Weiser, Troyan, Robinson and Shearer won the event with a time of 3:06.44.
The men’s Swimmer of the Meet was Shippensburg’s Mike Owen, who won three individual events including the 1000, 500 and 200 yard freestyle races.
Clarion’s top performers on the night included Adley Kilgore who was second in the 100 freestyle (46.55) and teammate Chris Jones who was 5th in the 100 free (47.62), and James Rankin fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:14.50). Clarion’s Adam Smearman was second in the 200 butterfly (1:56.43), and the 400 free relay team of Jones, Rankin, Wamelink and Kilgore finished second with a time of 3:09.15.
The Men’s PSAC title for West Chester is their 8th straight and gives West Chester 19 men’s team titles dating back to 1959. Clarion has been second each of the last eight years. The Clarion men have won 24 PSAC men’s championships since 1971.
