.: Oakland Continues to Lead Mid-Continent Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. , February 18th, 2006

Oakland’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving squads moved one step closer to their seventh consecutive Mid-Continent Conference Swimming & Diving Championships with more record breaking performances during the second day of competition. The Championships conclude tomorrow at the IUPUI Natatorium with the preliminaries set to begin at 11 a.m. (Eastern), while the finals are slated to start at 6:30 p.m. (Eastern).

The Golden Grizzlies’ men continued to set the pace on the standings board as they finished day two with 692.0 points. IUPUI moved into second place with 296.0 tallies, while Eastern Illinois (270.0) checked in at third. Western Illinois sits in fourth with 253.0 points, followed by Centenary (235.0), Valparaiso (200.0) and South Dakota State (196.0).

On the women’s side, OU leads the competition with 643.0 points, while Eastern Illinois (361.5) and Western Illinois (353.0) sit in second and third place, respectively. IUPUI checks in at fourth position (255.5) with Centenary (210.0), Valparaiso (183.0) and South Dakota State (167.0) completing the standings after day two.

Western Illinois’ Eric Campbell started the day with a win in the three-meter diving event with a mark of 311.40. Oakland then started its surge with a record-breaking performance in the women’s 200 medley relay at 1:45.94, besting the mark OU set in 2003 (1:46.72). The men followed suit with their own record-setting win, finishing the event in 1:30.90, nearly two seconds better than the previous mark set by Wright State in 1991. Amanda Burwell (4:24.61) and Nick McCollum (3:59.98) would then give the Golden Grizzlies their first individual titles of the night with victories in the 400 individual medley.

Melissa Jaeger would keep the momentum going with a win in the 100 butterfly with an NCAA “B” standard time of 55.01. Chris Sullivan broke his second record of the Championships with a time of 48.20 in the 100 fly. The individual titles would continue to go to Oakland as Carolyn Routh and Bryon Tansel would win their respective 200 freestyle events. Routh touched the wall in 1:54.53, while Tansel went to the top of the podium with a mark of 1:39.04.

Melissa Jaeger was the next record-setting swimmer for Oakland as she set the Mid-Con mark in the 100 breaststroke with an NCAA “B” qualifying standard of 1:03.50. Zoltan Horvath added another individual title as he took first place in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.91. Tara Baxter and Eric Lynn continued the OU momentum with wins in the 100 backstroke. Baxter bested the competition with a mark of 58.84, while Lynn touched the wall in 50.47. OU ended the day with a sweep of the 800 freestyle relays as the women posted a time of 7:42.44 and the men earned the gold with 6:50.81 effort.
