.: Record-Breaking Relay Puts Wisconsin In Lead After Day 1 of Big Ten Championships

February 15th, 2006

The University of Wisconsin’s eleventh-ranked women’s swimming and diving team set a Big Ten record in the 200-yard medley relay on day one of competition at the 2006 Big Ten Championships Wednesday night at the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio.

In the first event of the Big Ten championships, Wisconsin’s relay team of Susan Johnson, Amailia Sarnecki, Sarah Hernandez, and Jackie Vavrek set a Big Ten record in the 200-yard medley relay with an NCAA “A” time of 1:38.89. The relay team crushed the previous record of 1:39.41 by almost one second. Wisconsin’s first-place relay team beat Michigan by almost two seconds, followed by Indiana in third.

“I am really proud of how the women came together and swam great,” said head coach Eric Hansen. “It feels great to be in first place after day one, but we are really here to swim well as a team."
