.: DeJong, Fagan, Lofsted, Loukas Receive Big Ten Weekly Laurels

February 1st, 2006

Chris DeJong and Ryan Fagan each claim Men's Big Ten weekly honors after strong performances last weekend, while Annica Lofsted and Christina Loukas garner Big Ten Women's Swimmer and Diver of the Week accolades.

DeJong went unbeaten for the Wolverines in dominating dual wins over conference opponents No. 11 Indiana (160-140) and No. 18 Ohio State (164-77) last weekend. He claimed four individual events, swam on two winning relays, recorded one NCAA "A" consideration time and met four "B" standards. The senior captain set a new pool record in the 200-yard backstroke as he touched the wall first in 1.42.73 for an automatic qualification. DeJong's "B" performances came in the 200 freestyle (1:38.28) against Ohio State and also in the 100 (47.67) and 200 (1:46.45) backstroke events and 800 freestyle relay (6:34.71) versus Indiana. The Holland, Mich., native also was a member of the first-place 200 medley relay team that won in 1:30.03 against the Buckeyes and then took second behind the Hoosiers in 1:29.54. This is the third weekly accolade of his career as he was most recently honored on Jan. 11, 2005.

Fagan earns Diver of the Week honors for the third time this season and fourth of his career after two strong performances over the weekend for the Hoosiers. Against Michigan he swept the three-meter and platform competitions. The defending Big Ten Diver of the Week notched first-place with 348.83 points and moved into the sixth all-time best performance for IU on the platform. He went on to claim first-place on the three-meter board (348.60), which placed him sixth overall in another Hoosier record. Fagan has been honored three times this season, all occurring in January.

Loftstedt led the Hoosiers with four event titles, including four NCAA provisional times, in a double-dual competition against Penn State (L, 197.5-142.5) and Ohio State (W, 199-151). Her individual victories came in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events as she touched the wall first in B-cut times of 23.48 and 50.87, respectively. The Orebro, Sweden, native was also part of the 400-yard freestyle relay that claimed first in 3:24.70 and the second-place 400 medley relay (3:44.77) as both squads claimed "B" standards. Lofstedt also swam on the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:34.19) and the 200 medley relay (1:43.86) that recorded second-place. She has now been named Swimmer of the Week twice in her career as she was last honored on Nov. 1, 2005.

Loukas swept the springboard competition as she defeated opponents from Penn State and Ohio State last weekend. The defending Big Ten Diver of the Week surpassed the previous one-meter pool record as she tallied 322.20 points in the event. She went on to claim the three-meter competition with a 332.92 mark. This is the third weekly honor of her career and marks the second time this season she has been honored with teammate Annica Lofstedt.
