US Marine Academy Spilts with Montclair State

Kings Point, N.Y. , December 12th, 2006     

Winning all but one event, the United States Merchant Marine Academy men’s swimming and diving team defeated the Montclair State Redhawks, 149-86, Tuesday evening at O’Hara Pool. With the win, the Mariners advance to 4-1 on the season, while the Redhawks fall to 4-4.

The women had a different decision as they fell to 3-2 on the season as they were defeated by the Montclair State Redhawks, 128-94, Tuesday night at O’Hara Pool. With the win, the Redhawks advance to 3-5 on the season.

For the men, Jay Carpenter, Matt Ellison and Stephen Ingvolstad were double event winners for the Mariners. David Scarberry, Justin Adams, Mickey Hand and Scott Pearson also won events for the Merchant Marine Academy.

Carpenter finished first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:16.66 and the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:00.12. 

With times of 2:04.77 and 1:49.21 Ellison won the 200-yard butterfly event and the 200-yard freestyle.

Ingvolstad defeated Mohamed Abdelaal from Montclair State by .42 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle, to finish with a time of 22.00. He outswam Abdelaal again in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.50.

Scarberry defeated Redhawk Brandon Sands in the 1,000-yard freestyle for a 10:22.30 win.

Off the diving boards, Adams finished first off the 1-meter board with a total of 117.98 points, while Hand finished similarly off the 3-meter board with a 191.03 total.

Pearson was the final individual winner for the evening with a win in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:01.53.

The Mariners also opened and closed the meet with relay wins. First, the 400-yard medley team of Pearson, Carpenter, Ingvolstad and William Ansell defeated their Redhawk competition by 6.35 seconds for a time of 3:39.90. Then, the 400-yard freestyle team of Ellison, Scarberry, Scott Heilman and Jackson Mershon finished with a time of 3:26.73 to give the Mariners their final 11 points.

For the Mariner women, Sarah Christensen swept the diving competition as she won both the 1-meter and 3-meter events.

Christensen scored a 145.80 in the 1-meter event and a 138.45 off the 3-meter board totaling 18 point for the Mariner women. Senior Morgan Evans defeated the Redhawk competition in the 100-yard backstroke, with a time of 1:08.14, outswimming Katie Eaches and Jilllian Reichart to earn the crucial nine points.

The women’s 200-yard medley relay team of Evans, Cassandra Shadwick, Gina Gottschalk and Marjorie Marino finished second behind Montclair State with a time of 2:08.51.

The Mariners will take a five week hiatus before competing at Rowan University on Jan. 13, 2007. During the down time, the Mariners will travel to Ft. Lauderdale, Fl., for their annual winter training trip.
