.: Patriot League Announces Swimming, Diving Weekly Accolades

Lehigh sophomore swimmer Jonathan Kearney, Colgate freshman swimmer Emily Murphy, Lehigh sophomore diver Clark Cohen, and Navy sophomore diver Katie Griffin were honored by the Patriot League as swimming and diving athletes of the week for the week of Oct. 31-Nov. 6.

Kearney led Lehigh in the pool to its first victory of the season over Patriot League rival Colgate (165-135). He won three individual events and helped a relay team finish second by two one hundreds of a second. Kearney won the 1,000 yard free in a time of 10:06.99, finishing nearly 10 seconds better the second-place finisher. He also won the 200-yard fly with a time of 1:57.26, and the 500-yard free (4:56.77). Along with his individual wins, Kearney helped the 400-yard free relay team to a second-place finish.

Other swimmers nominated were American's Val Fomenko (Jovy-En-Josas, France/Espadon Develizy), Army's Efri Ruthernberg (Perioa, Az./Cactus), and Bucknell's Ian Rawhauser (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) for male swimmer of the week.

Murphy won two individual events and one relay in helping Colgate to wins over Navy (166-134) and Lehigh (209-90). On the day she set a school record in the 100 yard breast with a time of 1:04.77 breaking the former mark by 0.77 seconds. She also swam the second fastest time in school history in the 200-yard breast with a time of 2:22.91, after setting the varsity record in her first collegiate meet. She also helped the 200-yard medley relay team to first-place finish with a split time of 29.75, in the breaststroke leg of the race.

Other swimmers nominated for female swimmer of the week were American's Megan Thiel (Arlington, Va./Yorktown), Army's Amanda Otto (West Seneca, N.Y./Christian Central), Bucknell's Rebecca Scheffer (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore), Holy Cross' Maddie Alanis (La Jolla, Calif./Our Lady of Peace) and Navy's Jennie Spencer (Smithburg, W. Va./Doddridge County).

Cohen led the Mountain Hawks on the boards to their first win of the season finishing first in both the one-meter and three-meter events. His score of 265:90 in the one-meter was a personal best but he also defeated his nearest competitor by nearly 63 points. On the three-meter board he scored a total 268.85.

Army's Doug Klein (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing) and Bucknell's Adam Freeman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) were also nominated for male diver of the week.

Griffin improved her season record to 8-2 this season winning both the one-meter and thre-meter dives against Colgate and Lehigh. She won the one meter with a score of 241.60, and the three meter by, 43.05 points. Her combined career record in Patriot League dual meets now stands at 11-3.

Army's Chelsea Haviland (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) was also nominated for female diver fo the week.
