.: 5 Athletes Collect Big Ten Weekly Laurels

After a weekend of heavy competition, 5 Big Ten athletes took home the conference’s Swimmer and Diver of the week award.

Big Ten Champions Peter Vanderkaay of Michigan and Mike Alexandrov of Northwestern both received Co-Swimmer of the Week honors after turning in stellar weekend performances.

Vanderkaay won three individual events and a relay in a dual meet as No. 4 Michigan defeated No. 11 Georgia, 179-121.The senior won the 1,650-yard freestyle in 15:05.17, claiming an NCAA qualifying "A" standard. He met the "B" standard with a time of 4:23.91 in the 500 freestyle and touched the wall first in the 400 individual medley in a time of 3:56.62. Vanderkaay helped his 200 freestyle relay team swim to first place in a 1:22.20 fashion.

Alexandrov posted three NCAA qualifying "B" standards in Northwestern's double-dual with Michigan State and Purdue. The junior placed first in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events in 54.95 and 1:57.91, respectively. He also finished first in the 200 individual medley in 1:48.61. He is the first Wildcat to record "B" standards this season.

Taking home the Big Ten men’s Diver of the Week accolade is Adam Pierce of Penn State. This is his second Diver of the Week laurel this season. Pierce placed first off of two boards in a dual meet with La Salle. The senior finished first in the one-meter event with 348.52 points before claiming the three-meter board title, scoring 355.65 points.

Taking home honors for the women were Kaitlyn Brady of Michigan and Amanda Miller of Purdue.

Brady earns her first Swimmer of the Week honor this season after posting two NCAA automatic qualifying times against top No. 11 Georgia. The junior placed second in the 50-yard freestyle and 200 backstroke events with "B" standards of 23.29 and 2:00:05, respectively. Brady also finished first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 23.45 and assisted her 200-medley relay team to second place.

Miller earns her Diver of the Week honors after placing first in the 1-meter event and third in the three-meter board in a double-dual meet with Northwestern and Michigan State. Against Northwestern the junior's 349.70 points was good enough for first in the one-meter while breaking the pool record. She then scored 256.10 points to claim third in the three-meter competition. She finished first again in the one-meter against Michigan State with 349.70 point and third in the three-meter board with 256.10 pts.
