The UMBC women's swimming and diving team improved to 4-0 on the season with a 166-74 win over host Binghamton Saturday afternoon. The Retriever men were edged by their America East foes in a close one, 123-120, at Koessler Athletic Center Pool.

The women won all but won event, with senior Amber Harris (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Arcadia), junior Ashley Houghton (Frederick, Md./Urbana/Pittsburgh) and freshman Daniele Surkovich (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) leading the way with two individual victories apiece. Harris grabbed her first wins of the season, taking the 500- and 1,000-free with times of 5: 22.46 and 10:54.71, respectively. Houghton swept the diving events for the fourth straight meet, scoring 279.75 on the 3-meter board and 264.90 on the 1-meter. Surkovich took both the 50-free (25.01) and the 200-fly (2:09.63 ).

Other winners for the Retrievers included junior Meghan Sackett (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney/Maryland) in the 200-free (1:54.20), freshman Robin Klein (McMinnville, Ore./McMinnville) in the 200-IM (2:14.74), sophomore Rachel Lesslie (Kingston, Ontario, Canada/Holy Cross) in the 200-back (2: 15.02) and freshman Tina Cantwell (Sinking Spring, Pa./The Hill School) in the 200-breast (2:25.28).

The women also swept the relays, with junior Agnes Stanislawska (Zielona Gora, Poland/LO VI Zielona Gora), Cantwell, Sackett and Klein teaming up to win the 400-medley relay in 4: 00.09 and Sackett, senior Elyse Gibson (Nova Scotia, Canada/Queen Elizabeth), sophomore Lindsey Engler Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) and Surkovich winning the 400-free relay in 3:42.82.

On the men's side, junior Jeff Salgado (Glen Rock, Pa./South Western/St. Bonaventure) broke both UMBC diving records in the Retrievers' loss. His score of 301.28 on the 3-meter board broke his own record of 300.98, which he set last weekend against Navy. Salgado also shattered Kevin Firman's six-year-old 1-meter record of 281.77 by nearly 20 points with a score of 301.65.

Junior Ryan Karrer (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional) swept the distance events for the fourth consecutive meet, taking the 500-free in 4: 44.84 and the 1,000-free in 10:05.98.

Freshman Milos Djukic (Novi Sad, Serbia & Montenegro/Svetozar Markovic) was the only other winner for the Retriever men, as he grabbed the 200-back in 1: 55.19.

The Retrievers return to action tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m., as they head to South Orange, N.J. to take on Seton Hall in non-conference action.
